I just moved back into the city. Dear God the county sucks at code enforcement, public services and community standards; letting low life do what they want and me paying fees and taxes to help then in the process. Maybe the city's police have issues but the county part just sucks and is way to liberal, and the nusince crimes just go unchecked. Advice, stay in the city or get out of Polk County!

Polk County in general has become the wrist slapping county of Florida. The laws are made to satisfy the political correctness but to give the impression of order. Little things that are the catalyst to bigger things go ignored or accepted, or as stated you get a wrist slapping. After 26 years here I have seen it degrade with areas looking like 3rd world countries, gang type hood communities, people doing what ever they want and not caring how it affects the rest of the area. And it goes on and on. I am considering moving now. I am tired of hearing boom music 24/7, seeing peoples property become junk yards, the constant smell of people burning their old furniture or trash because they are too lazy to take it to the curve or don't care. Being woke up in the middle of the night because of someone decided they wanted to work on one of their junk cars. The cops are called, the heath people are called and on and on. And all they do is slap their wrists and then it just gets worse because they can do it again with the same results. After thinking I hated the idea of living in a home owners area I am beginning to think its a good idea at least in Polk County.

I think you should check it out for yourself, because I Did. lake-land highlands has one of the highest elevation in Florida the north side is somewhat country but as for crime there is crime everywhere in the world but I live in lakeland now i never lock my car doors sometime i forget to close my front door or I'll go out and leave my window open my neighbors across the streets goes to work and leaves her windows open and yet nothing never stolen from us in fact i lost my phone on a public bus and got it back the person who found it returned it back. How many places in the US are like that. the people define your experience there are good and bad pple all over the world chose your friends wisely.

Hi, we are thinking of buying a repossesed home in the Bridgewater subdivision of Lakeland. Can anyone advise if this is a good or bad area?

Bridgewater is about a mile from I4 and in a semi-rural area not far from the new Polytechnic college. It is a low crime area if that's what your asking.

Yes. That is our main concern. We were looking to be half way between Tampa and Orlando. The house we found in Bridgewater is easily 100k cheaper than same home by same builder in either of the big cities. But since we will be retired security is a major concern.

Just make sure you investigate any home owners association. Some of them are very reasonable but some are a huge pain the butt. Crazy rules and such. Only certain mailboxes, can't park in your driveway, etc.

I have lived in Boston, Chicago, New York and other smaller cities, among them lakeland. And I can honestly say when I see posts like the ones on here proclaiming lakeland is going to hell in a hand basket, that crime is horrific, that it's gangland.... I step back and piss my pants from laughter. Gangland? High crime? Rough ghettos?! BWAHAHAHA!
Show me an instance where several gangs numbering in the dozens, have had a shoot out killing scores of people. Show me a lakeland school that requires armed guards be placed along the walking routes every single day, to ensure none of the kids are shot to death by roaming gangs. Show me the urban decay and whole swaths of the city abandoned and over run by arsonists, rapists and murders, killing at will, the police helpless to stem the violence. This crime utopia I painted isn't some fiction from a 80's dystopian movie, or baghdad.... This is what i saw living in chicago, and what happens daily in whats left of detroit!!
You people know NOTHING of crime, NOTHING of gangland, and NOTHING of a truly drug riddled city. I shall put it another way. The absolute worst areas of Lakeland, are still safer and less crime ridden then the best parts of chicago. So there are meth labs, drug dealers, homeless and hookers in lakeland. There are these things in every city in america... the only difference is volume... the more people there are the most noticeable it becomes. There are bad areas in lakeland. There are, again, bad areas in every large town and city. what are you gonna do to avoid it, live in a shack in the swamp? I find the ones complaining the most on here, and in general, are frightened white people who have the emotional stability and sociability of a junk yard doberman. You want crime cleaned up? you want the, laugh, "ghetto" areas cleaned up? Then stop running away from lakeland and stay and elect officials who aren't gonna keep maintaining a status quo from the eisenhower era. Lakeland is as good a place as any in florida to live. As for having kids in lakeland... if you raise them to NOT be drug users, get them into sports or other extra curricular activities, teach them about contraception and where babies REALLY come from... you won't end up with a meth dealing 14 year old on her third baby and the IQ of a whiffle ball bat.

I just drove through Lakeland, and feared for my life the entire time. I would never move my wife and small children to that area, even if the downtown is nice compared the the crime pit that surrounds it.

Just thought I would comment since there are so many people trashing Lakeland.. Lakeland has some bad areas just like most places but there are a lot of great neighborhoods South & around the lakes and downtown that are beautiful.. Publix is headquartered there and Rooms to go and Geico have a lot of jobs close by.. There are a lot of million dollar homes and high end neighborhoods in Lakeland so please disregard the idiots that say the whole town is hoodrats and white trash...The schools arent terrible and there are good private schools you can send kids too...
Well, most of Lakeland has gone down the tubes. I grew up there in the 60's and loved it. There were tons of places for kids to run and play. There were groves and lots of green space and now, it's all become a cluster f. It's terrible. I don't care for that sandpit any longer. I prefer the cooler weather and a good nights sleep knowing I'm not going to be dragged underneath my house by some sinkhole. But hey, if youse people like that kind of a thing, at least you won't be up north messing with the rest of us.

I'll have to disagree with George. I've lived in Lakeland for 7 years now (13 years in Tampa) and though it does have it's rough spots, it is nowhere near 'the hood'. I grew up in Philadelphia. Now that's the hood! Lakeland isn't even close.
I agree with you 100%. You want to see the hood go to brick city (Newark, NJ) East Orange, Irvington, the bronx. Lakeland is not the hood believe me.
