how about the flea markets in lakeland...are they any good anymore? i remember when i was a kid my mom and dad used to take us to the flea markets there. they were great. lots of booths, lots to eat,you could play bingo there, feed the fish, ride an elephant....i LOVED the flea markets in lakeland. can anyone let me know if they are pretty much the same or have they changed alot? also remember on the weekends our family would all get together and go to saddle creek and fish and barbque, and just have a good time being together....of course this was a little over 20 years ago. just wondering if people are getting the same enjoyment out of them now...like i did when i was a kid...

I don't understand the comments where people are judging that they are nuts, or clueless or wrong. Everything that has been said here, is corret. There may be a few neighborhoods that aren't crime-ridden, but the fact is, it's an older styled town. Nothing there is newer looking....unless there has been a complete renovation in the last 7 or 8 years. I grew up going there one a year every year. I have family there and they aren't really any big success stories coming out of there. It's natural to be defensive of where you live, but I can't believe that anyone could say with a strait face that it's a "great plae to live." Don't lie....
I'm really curious if this place is decent enough for a single mother of two young children. I'm moving there from California for my daughter to attend a specialty school. I really don't want to live in a bad area. Any input would be appreciated.

Like any town, Lakeland has it good areas as well as its bad areas. I'd suggest south Lakeland.

I've lived here for 8 years (13 before in Tampa). Never had anything stolen. Never been robber or assaulted. And I don't live in one of the better areas.

BTW, for those that think Lakeland is a dump & crime ridden, I grew up in Philly. THAT had crime. This is peanuts.

I'll have to disagree with George. I've lived in Lakeland for 7 years now (13 years in Tampa) and though it does have it's rough spots, it is nowhere near 'the hood'. I grew up in Philadelphia. Now that's the hood! Lakeland isn't even close.
That could be our new state motto, "not as bad as Philadelphia"
now if we could get all you yanks to go home.

You mean the leather one? Thanks. And it's a Vulcan 1500 not a scooter.

I grew up in Lakeland and had to move 5 years ago. I am currently in the panhandle. I miss Lakeland everyday. It's got it's bad areas but what town doesn't??

I lived there most of my life. My response to the question: is Lakeland a good place to live... well that certainly would depend on what your looking for. Growing up in N. Lakeland was down home country living ( in which I do miss). I even watched the orange groves being torn down to build Lakeland Square Mall & 98 N was only 2 lanes. Its more like a small verson of Tampa or Orlando. But still a good place to visit & keep some of my memories alive. But that's just my thought on it :-)
