Does anyone rmember the 2 day (Saturday Sunday) rock festival held at the speedway around 1977 or 1978?
I was trying to come up with a lineup of artists that performed. Any organizers/participants still out there? I worked SECURITY for the event but can remember VERY LITTLE....

And we only paid $10 - My kids look at my photo album and ask about all the ticket stubs I have saved - they can not believe the Led Zepp ticket at the Tampa Stadium - only $10 also

Outstanding help with the links. Thanks so much. That really sparked some neurons and unlocked some memories! I was part of the production company's security team (Orange t-shirts were our uniform) and once the crowd was let in through the gates, we could just blend in and have a good time... which we did !
I was completely unaware that the KKK had a big rally in town when the festival was underway, but I lived in Orlando and didn't read newspapers much then.

I was there. I remember Melanie, Jimmy Buffet, Atlanta Rythym Section, Johnathan Edwards and the guy that sang Welcome Back from the Lovin' Spoonful I think. It is a miracle I remember that much!

I was doing my last month of a 4 yr hitch in the Navy stationed at NTC Orlando. I went for the entire event and especially for ARS and Buffet. I have a great memory but they were passin somethin around that cause memory loss. I do remember the water tankers where we all got showers just to cool off. It was cool that night before but when the sun came out it got hot. A fun time memory loss not withstanding.

Ah the good old days when the bands actually made money and the promoters only got a cut. Now it is the other way around. And then there is the convenience fees. Conveniently pocketed that is...
you had to be there

I was there and I was hammered. Walked and hitchhiked around 2:00 am from St Leo College. It was a rough couple days, hot as hell. Thank God for those water trucks. The highlights of the show were Leon Redbone in either a drunken stupor or a psychedelic haze falling off a couch that the roadies brought out on stage because he couldn't stand up. He couldn't get through one song. Then "Cactus" who was a reincarnation of "Iron Butterfly" came out and did "In A Gadda Da Vida" Jimmy Buffet closed the show. I was 18, had no cash on me, ripped my shorts climbing over the fence sneaking in after my plastic beer can ring failed to pass as the bracelets they were selling. Going on the tour at the Schlitz Brewery in Tampa earlier that 1st day for about the fifteenth time set the stage for a great weekend. I am married now with 3 kids that just wouldn't appreciate that weekend.

Ritchie Havens playing Here Comes The Sun, to open Sunday morning was way cool. Some of you might remember me and my brother, we sold Bush tallboys for a buck apiece, a pretty hefty sum for one beer in 1977. We bought 13 cases of them at the Winn Dixie and brought them with us. We drank 3 cases and sold 10. By the way, they were on sale that week for 99 cents a six pack.

I was part of the "security" team that came from Florida Southern College. We were hired by Wackenhut to cruise the site and report any wrongdoings...riiiiight. All we did was dump the Wackenhut uniforms and enjoyed the show.
Once the show was over we put the uni's back on and got paid for our "security" services. Easiest
($) I ever made.

Melanie, Earl Scruggs, Canned Heat, Orleans, Altanta Rythem, Buffett,Pure Praire League,Leon Redbone, Richie Havens. That is some of the line up. I remember Redbone being aweful, How hot it was, the water trucks. Havens did play "here comes the Sun" Sunday morning. PPL played Amy at about 3am. Tore my pants going over the back fence in a cow pasture!

I was there, took my little brother,it was his first concert (made a lasting impression on him)We took a little rope and a ice cold keg of bud, We shared the keg and everything else we needed was furnished by our new friends. I remember Buffet playing pencil thin mustache, I was totally amazed and zipped by this time, some how made it back to the tent with this girl, never did find out her name.Found a couple of our friends that we came with rolling around in a big mud puddle. They had a great time too. Started school that Monday and couldn't talk for two days. It was a great concert one of the best. Damn shame they don't do em like that anymore !

we sat on the ground about 100ft from the stage it was very hot weather i borrowed a pocket knife a cut my jeans into shorts drank moonshine kool-aid smoked some weed an droped LSD and viewed what i thought was a happening concert..Cactus,Melanie,Leon Redbone, The Atlanta Rythnm Section,Earl Scruggs,Richie Havens and Jimmy Buffet was the headliner rock-on 1977

Well I imagine "all" ya'll remember me. I spent most of the concert in the backseat of a Polk County Sherrifs car. I was driving on that make shift trail and it seemed like half the crowd was catching a ride on my car,all over my car. Several times I had to stop and beg them to get off the front so I could see. Well my luck one of those times as I was walking back to get back in my car it just so happens some dude passed out and fell under my front end...yup, dude got ran over. They didn't charge me or nothing. By the time Richie Havens started singing "Here Comes the Sun" I was singing I Just Gotta Get Outa This Place.

I was there, I hitched out from Orlando, and though I don't remember much, I recall that to save money they burned the fields in a couple of spots and I walked around with ash all over my shoes.
Also, and this was a big downer, but it didn't bum me out as much then as it would now... I was super tired one afternoon, Saturday I guess, and because of the ash everywhere I couldn't lie down just anywhere, so I crawled inside someone's tent that had been set up. Before crashing, I pulled everything out of my pockets, and I mean everything, folding money (not a lot of that!), my bag of weed, other odds and ends and put them in my frisbee 'cause having anything in my pockets at that moment just galled me, for some reason..
Sooo...some ass wipe came into that tent while I was zonked out and stole everything I had brought with me, & even took my frisbee.
Oh, and setting the stage up at the top of the high-banked west turn wasn't a great idea; it made standing close to the stage a real problem. And that put the stage at least 65 feet above ground level for peple sitting in the infield, a horrible idea from the promoters.

I should clarify; to save money, instead of mowing the fields around the water truck areas and so on, they burned them off in the days before the festival...
