Forty years ago today, on June 20, 1969, my family was staying at a relative's cottage at Lake Winola. Late that afternoon a strong thunderstorm hit, and I was startled to see hailstones pelting down. I was puzzled that something icy could be falling from the sky on the last day of spring. My father explained to me that hail fell during thunderstorms, a common summer phenomenon. It was the first encounter with hail that I remember.
