My heart is torn by this story. I feel such sympathy for this family, losing their child and having their lives affected so dramatically. I am adamently opposed to impaired drivers, regardless of the source of their impairment. But, tubing on Petite Lake at a peak traffic time on a Saturday is a horrible mistake in judgement. I saw this compared to sending your kid out to play in the middle of the tollway at rush hour - it's true. Somewhere, there needs to be some accountability for that. It needs to be part of the lesson learned by all from this horrible tragedy.

So glad I moved off the chain when I did. We lived on Bluff Lake, and no matter how many buoys or markers we put out, idiots still came close to the kids. People, if you are going to tube or water ski, go north to Channel or Catherine. Or do it on a weekday. Yes, it's best to take the idiots off the water, but you have to protect yourselves from them as well!

I have been boating on the chain for 25 + years and I'm of the opinion that most of the problems seem to stem from 'non-locals'. In its infinite greed, the waterway agency just keeps selling user permits, without regard to crowds or safety. I feel if you live more than ? miles away, you shouldn't be issued a sticker, and limit temp passes to a certain # per day.(But then thay would have to be open daily!) It's gotten so bad that I will not venture out Saturday AM through Sun late afternoon. When the weekenders leave all is peaceful again.

I too used to live off of the lake back in the 70's.
It was a mess even back then.
Its dangerous enough watching over your kids on dry land while in water you have to be 1000 times more attentive.

It really bothers me how much drinking, drugs, etc goes on these boats too.
I've seen people who would never drink in a car get smashed while boating or snowmobiling.

I don't feel a bit sorry for this drunk.
14 years tops ??
How about 30 to life without any hope of parole.

Agree Svengali. I don't know the answer, but something needs to be done. More patrols (one boat assigned to every lake), or HP limitations? The business community will likely oppose any limits on waterway use, to protect their income. I guess I can't blame them, the season is short as it is.

We kept our boat up on the lift from Friday mid-day till usually Monday night. Water doesn't settle down till Wednesday. Weeknights are the best time.

First of all, I am not defending this guy one bit, he got what he deserved.
Show me a boater out there on the weekend that isnt drunk.
Show me a boater out there on the weekend that isnt acting like an idiot.
What were they doing tubing on Petite Lake during the weekend. I know there are no regulations on it, but cmon, everyone knows its a bad idea.
Somoeone needs to start enforcing rules on this waterway. Im suprised it took this long for something as tragic as this to happen.
I believe you that you are not defending him.
I doubt anyone would.

Tubing may be a bad idea but its LEGAL
Being DRUNK and operating a boat is ILLEGAL
The fact that most of them are drunk out there does not lessen the fact that what they are doing is ILLEGAL.

So all things considered maybe the DRUNKS need to sober up and learn that there are KIDS out there tubing LEGALLY

to answer your last question
i hope not.
We have too many laws now telling us what to do.
Some i agree with like seat belts. However i didn't need a law requiring it. I was already doing it.

I still say what is legal trumps what is illegal.
With that ion mind i would prefer we make the area the kids play in as safe as we can.
Even if it means restricting how close boats and other motorizes items can get to.

Personally i have grand kids who do their swimming and water play at the YMCA. Cheap and worth every dime.
If you are going to put kids into water they should at the very least learn how to swim.

I think you and i are pretty much on the same page.
At least in so far as this drunk guy goes.
The real issue now becomes how to make it safer for the kids.
My recommendation is swimming lessons and a place like the YMCA that has lifeguards on duty as a place to play safe.

Again, I agree whol heartedly that he deserves everything that he got.
The argument Im trying to make is that yes, tubing is legal out there, but common sense comes into play.
It would be very difficult to see a small child bobbing in the water, with all that traffic out there.
Playing golf in a lighting storm is legal, but not advisable. There are alot of things that are legal to do, but you just dont do them.
Do we need to start making laws to supplemeant our common sense?
Thank you for understanding my comments in the way I meant them. And great analogy.:)
