I grew up on South Bleeker Street (longer ago than I want to admit to) near the Greco Brothers Construction area, and was curious what the Mount Vernon Avenue/Bleeker/High/Bond Street areas are like these days...

South Bleeker St. is in the southwest corner of Mount Vernon between Mount Vernon Avenue and New Haven Railroad Street. If you go out Mount Vernon Avenue east you get to Lincoln Avenue and west you go to the Bronx River Parkway and eventually Yonkers Raceway after it turned into Yonkers Avenue. Lived there from the late 1950's through about 1970 or so.

I remember the simpler times. Going to "Playland" in Rye, picnics in Hartley Park, the street festivals, playing stick ball, the holiday scenes at Cross County Shopping Center, shopping on 4th Avenue, etc...

I lived in the building that housed the Greco brothers offices, right above the mother, Mrs. Greco. If I remember right, John Troncone used to deliver the Daily Argus to our family. We used to play stickball, and "running bases" in the St. Mary's parking lot. Also enjoyed the festivals (and occasional snow forts) in that parking lot with the games and such. Ah, the simpler times of youth. Did you know the Gelardo, Bicknese, Serini, and Mazza families?

I lived on Bleeker Street from 1958 until about 1970. I do indeed remember the Grove Street Playground, and played there quite often. If I remember right, across the street there was the junkyard on the Bleeker Street end, and the milk distributor on the High Street end.

I remember a candy store on one corner of S. Bleeker and Mount Vernon Avenue who had great burgers and egg creams at the lunch counter, and Nargi's Bar on the other. The candy store got destroyed by a fire. Across the street on the N. Bleeker side was Pat Saliola's deli.

I went to Hamilton Elementary as well.

The name is familiar but I am not sure. I remember the building, because it had a cool facade and I got hurt a couple times falling down while climbing it.

The Good Humor truck coming by was always a treat. The neighborhood kids would all stop what they were doing when they heard the jingle of the ice cream trucks bell.

Do you remember the name of the barber shop on Mount Vernon Avenue approaching South Bond Street? Got most of my early haircuts there.

On the corner oF Bond Street & Mt. vernon ave. there was a grocery store owned by the Gremaldi family, and if you made a right on bond street right there was the funeral home. you said you went to Hamilton elementary I wonder if any of the same teachers were still there when you attended. Mrs. Townsend, Mrs. H,utchitson, Mr. Rhoads was the principal. I am surprised you didn't know the Ragnones, they lived across the street and about 4 houses to the right.

When I was there, the teachers I remember were Mrs. Bronk, Mrs. McGinn, Miss Beschler, Miss Gresio, Mrs. Sylvor and Mr. Palucci. Santina Fradella was the principal at the time and she could never sneak up on anybody because he perfume hit the area long before she did.

If you went to Nichols, you might have had Mr. Rothman, Dr. Franko, Who later became supt. of schools, or mr. Torrisi, who became principal of washinton Jr. high. it was a great school, it had rose bushes along the outside fences, and once a year you were allowed to pick the roses. Those were the days.

I went to Nichols for only a couple months before my family moved to Tuckahoe.

I put a couple pictures of the old neighborhood on the web. I will put more when I find them. The four color pictures were taken in the mid 1980's. It changed since we lived there, and I'm sure it has changed even more since my pictures were taken.

Hello, Charlie and JeezLouise, I was just looking up the history of Bleeker where I grew up and the history of railroad flats when I entered your chat. How cool is that. I lived on Bleeker St. from birth - 1948 to 1974. I don't remember any of the names you mentioned. We lived at 42, then moved to 48. I hung out with Lynnie Hollingsworth Greco, DiNisco's, Lamanna, Gregorios, Puglisis. Do you recognize the names. I have been back to just look about. The neighborhood has certainly changed. Trees have been cut down and there is a new building in the St. Mary's parking lot. Mt. Vernon Avenue is a mess. I would love to join your chat.

Hi. I was away for a while and didn't read your reply until today. I believe that I do remember the names Lamanna, Gregorio and Puglisi. Was on the Google Maps "Street View" the other day looking around the old neighborhood, and it sure has changes. I hung out mostly with the Bicknese and Serini kids, and the Barke's over on Bond Street.

Hello, I have been away also. Is your name Louise? I went back about five years ago and it has certainly changed. I looked at real estate on the block and that's gives a good picture of the area. I don't know Bicknese, Serini or Barke's on Bond.

Actually, I was born in 1948, but my sister is 8 years older, her name was Pat Maloney, now it's Wilson. I do remember a group of boys named the Red Devils. I am lucky to have had a colorful past in that area.
