I live in Mt. Vernon, but my children dont go to school in Mt. Vernon because I'm fearful that they wont be able to learn for fear of being attacked or shot or harassed by gang members. Something serious has to happen - maybe stronger penalties for those caught with guns or any types of weapons. The age statutes need to be reviewed...the 14 year old of today is far more mature and advanced than the 14 year old of the 60s and 70s. If you do the crime, you should be held accountable for the crime. This is madness. From what I understand, the guy who was shot while holding his young son was involved in some mess earlier in the evening, and his shooting/death was retaliation. It's' not right that he's gone, but this is what our kids are growing up in now, and it terrifies me. I have two young boys and I worry about their future.
Mount Vernon has some beautiful homes and some beautiful people living here. Unfortunately, the not so beautiful people are running rampant and ruining the beauty of our city. We need help, and we need it fast.

Betty I agree with you, our taxes keep going hire, and yet we get nothing out of it, not even roads that are repaired on time. The crime here is rampant, I would never want to raise my kids in this pit of a place, would give them nothing but a bad influence.

i am glad that you agree with me joe.
i see so many houses down there that are for sale because people want to get out of there. the taxes are killing everyone.

you should think about moving up north. the taxes are a little cheaper here in ct.
we live past danbury ct and its so beautiful and quiet here.
we have so much house here. people are very friendly and they say good morning to you. they don't walk by you like you don't exist like they do in ny.
people help eachother out here.

the kids play together and its a safer and better environment for the kids in ct.

As a senior citizen who grew up in Mt. Vernon during WWII, I'm apalled by what I just read. How far the city has deteriorated! Hope those citizens who really love their town will find the backbone to clean it up....it once was a lovely place to live. Now I really appreciate the New Emgland contryside where I now reside.

As a long ago, native of Westchester County, why? would any person in their right mind, want to live in Mt. Vernon, N.Y.? I think it sucked so bad...the crime connected families all moved out, decades ago. Does that tell you something?

PROGRAMS DON'T HELP THESE KIDS. IT STARTS AT HOME!!!! SOME OF THESE "MOTHERS" ARE WORST THAN THEIR CHILDREN! THEY HAVE A LOT OF PROGRAMS OUT THERE. THESE KIDS DON'T APPRECAITE THEM. MOST OF THEM CARE ABOUT SNEAKERS, BEING THE NEXT MICHAEL JORDAN, RAPPER. SOME OF THEM ARE USELESS

now a days these kids have no respect for anybody.
its a real shame. if they don't learn these tools at home from their parents the kids will not give a dam about anyone.
its a disgrace.
people shouldn't have kids if they aren't going to take care of them.
these kids should not being roamiong the streets.
its the parents fault for poor upbringing.

The thing about Mount Vernon is that we have plenty of places to spend our money but nowhere to really enjoy ourselves. We gotta go to the boroughs or yonkers & new rochelle to go to the movies or go to a applebee's, a bowling alley, arcade etc. There are no outlets for families & damn sure not enough outlets for the youth. A friend of mine was just murdered earlier this evening in Mount Vernon & he made the 11th homicide for the year IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN & that's the highest # in Westchester County, once again IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN. SENSELESS VIOLENCE!!!

I'm ended up on this site looking for info on a friends murder also. Mike I think you and I have the same friend in common. My mom called me this morning to let me know a childhood friend that I have known since the age of 8, lost his little brother last night! If I am 32 that would make my friends little brother somewhere in his mid twenties! The violence is senseless! My friends little brother leaves behind a 3 month old child. I grew up in Mt. Vernon. Although I never attended public school I had a few friends who did. Not sure if guys remember the '95 murder of Andre Frank, a star football player at Mt. Vernon High. The violence is nothing new but, it continues to grow worst every year. My mom and my little brother, who is 14 and attending Mt. Vernon High, are still there and I worry about them, especially him all the time. Mt. Vernon is the first town in Westchester outside of the city! It borders the Bronx. It is about 10 minutes away from the Manhattan by Metro North. These are just some of the reason why I have always expected more from my little town. I have been waiting for some big developer to see the potential in my little town and start the transformation, but that has yet to happen. Sorry to say but if we move out some of the undesirables, renovate downtown Mt. Vernon, 4th ave, 3rd St. corridor and put in place condos and attractive businesses we will get those that work downtown but cant afford downtown or want there money to do more to see Mt. Vernon as a viable option. Believe it or not, this would be a start in reducing the violence. You are right, it is up to the people of Mt. Vernon to make the change.
