Timothy Z. Jennings: Legislative cuts still looming in January

Over the course of the recent special session called by Gov. Richardson to address the $650 million budget shortfall, legislators took time away from their homes, jobs and families to perform a task I doubt any of them were excited about.

The ABQ Journal has reported on the hundreds of exempt employees on the payroll. 500 employees (and there are supposedly more) at $100,000 each is $50 million a year. How much is our deficit after nearly 8 years?

The people are the boss and the legislature and the governor are hired to do our bidding. The legislature could control the governor because the authority is there. Why they do not is another question everyone should be asking themselves.

We used to have a permanent fund from which monies came for education but that too was raided.

Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard.
