Should I move to Lake Placid?

I currently live in Utica, New York. I am being offered a job in Lake Placid. That is my in-a-nutshell background story.

Simple question, should I move here? What's there to do? I know it may sound dumb, but, where do people shop? Let's say I wanted to get a dress shirt, is there a mall close by? Where do you get groceries?

Fill me in on all the details.

Not too bad. Prices are high and there's no place to shop for regular things. Need to go to Malone or Plattsburgh for stuff like socks, clothes, etc.

No! Run the other way. Placid has all kinds of crime problems because they won't do anything about it. It's not public knowledge because they don't want to tarnish Placid's reputation as a pristine snow and tourist area. It's expensive to live there because everybody thinks their property is worth millions, taxes are high, people are snobby, there's no place to shop for regular daily things, traffic in the village sucks big time, the kids are spoiled little urchins because the parents don't give a damn about them and are too busy being big shots to raise them properly. Even the actual Lake Placid is patrolled by a fat, obnoxious, drunk who's nothing more than a common dime store hood.
Move to Bloomingdale or someplace else. Certainly not Saranac Lake either. There's definately something wrong with their water there. I've never seen a larger collection of misfits, lunatics, drunks, losers, and other assorted people like that in my life. The whole village is like that. I think NY city has been shipping them up here from the bowery in the Bronx or something.
Run. Run fast. But run - AWAY!

This comment is for "dont do it" maybe you should think before you speak! I have lived in Lake Placid for 20 years & I do not have the same views as you. Every town has children that are misfits..but not EVERYONE in LP thinks they are above everyone else. I am 110% involved in my FOUR childrens lives. I work & take care of my children & they are just fine! I can say I DO care about my children & what they do. & all of my friends & FAMILY who live in LP are the same way. & I know a majority of LP. So get your facts straight before you slam the whole town when apparently you dont know all who reside here. Have a nice day!

Nice way to pick out one point and then find a reason to be personally offended. Maybe the reason that you are so offended is because your little brats are a bunch of retards and your a no good turd of a parent. Whatever the case, no one was addressing you personally so stop being such a sensitive Sally...
To answer the topic, No... Run the other way. The north country is a dark pit of despair. It's pleasant in appearance until you actually live here, especially Placid. "Don't do it" was 99% on the money when they described the stuffy, get rich quick environment here... Not to mention the other things.

Sorry lady. My opinion stays. There's a problem in Placid that no one wants to admit exists, including you who apparently are the one and only parent who cares. I worked up there for 10 years and fund most kids and natives to be snooty. The kids were poorly behaved most of the time. And there's an air about the place that tends to make some people uneasy. It's expensive as hell to live there and there's no place to buy normal things like socks or underwear and not pay a bloody fortune. Unless you got money, you'll never fit in and if you try, they'll snuff you.
This is it from me. I won't be back to read what you have to say.

I think you should spend a wknd or longer up there and judge for yourself. If you're getting a good job and it pays well, go for it. I know there is not much shopping nearby. Malone or Plattsburgh for major clothes shopping. Trick.....buy a lot, like shampoo, body wash, necessary paper produts, food that doesn't spoil quickly, you shouldn't have that much of a problem. I would give my eye teeth to live in the adirondacks, but would want more rural area becuz I love nature. But I'm 63, retired and live on pensions and SS........so its kinda out of reach for me. Good luck w/whatever you decide and I would love to know what you end up doing, maybe you could post your decision. Anywhere but Utica has to be better.

Lake Placid and Saranac Lake is horrible!!!! I've lived all around the US and these people are in fantasy land. They all act like they are big shot CEO's and a majority of them are service workers. The scenery is wonderful but the people ruined it for me. I lived here for 3 years and I'm running for my life. There is no real wealth up here like they claim. So the poor people try to emulate rich people but act like fools because they have no comparison. For example, I have a use to be friend that claims he graduate with a BS in Physics. All the hicks think he's smart. My friend from Boston came to visit. She is one of the head research doctor for Pfizer. She talked to this guy and blew him away. She told me if he ever came to Boston that he would be cleaning up mouse poop in the labs, lol. Anyone from here would never make it in the real world. They are also right it is expensive as hell to live here. My dentist said he cant keep a dentist in practice because of the pay. I have never seen so many men mooch off women and I lived in the ghetto south. A great comparison: they think the Adk mountains are the equivalent to the Tetons. That's how they perceive themselves. The cool people that I have meet, that were born here, all have lived in other places. I know a great guy and he said he is cool because he lived in Alaska for 20 years. There is a war between the locals and transplants. I'm proud to call myself a transplant. All the athletic people you see here are because they are training, they aren't from here. The only Olympic sport the locals participate is extreme beer drinking at the wack pubs around the area.
