It is reprehensible this doe suffered for four hours after being shot. That the woman who was trying to help the doe was summarily dismissed when she called the police department to report the deer was still alive is emotional abuse. She turned to several agencies for help and no one helped her. I arrive on the scene after a police officer shot a buck who only dazed after being struck by a car. The buck was very much alive and moving around until the officer inexplicably shot him. After being shot and left for dead as the vehicle driver and officer turned away to discuss who would "get" the body, the buck raised his head and tried to get up. I screamed "he isn't dead". The officer shot him again. I will NEVER forget this. The officer had no idea how to fatally shoot this buck who never should have been shot. I am glad the county is going to train it's officers how to euthanize...and hopefully WHEN to euthanize and the dispatcher also needs to be trained to LISTEN and RESPOND to citizen reports about injured animals.
