Does the Truth, Law, or public opinion really matter anymore?
These days the United States Postal Service is a hot topic, with lots of facts, figures, and misinformation being freely tossed about for public consumption. While public concern and support is growing, so it appears, is congressional apathy. Meanwhile, the future of the post office, like the American flags hanging outside every post office door, is blowing proudly in the wind.
The Truth about America’s Postal Service:
This month, December 2011, a review of the performance of universal postal service providers by the Oxford Strategic Consulting firm named the USPS the best postal service within the world’s top 20 largest economies for access to services, resource efficiency and public trust.
Given these facts, no wonder Americans are so fond of their post offices. How is closing the Mid Florida Mail Processing Plant, or any post office, in keeping with the mission of the postal service? A recent Gallup poll reported that 86% of Americans oppose closing post offices. The public knows intuitively that USPS plan of mass closures nationwide of these local national treasures erodes confidence, reliability, public trust, and instead creates a public persona of a trusted institution now in retreat of it’s mission - to bind this nation together. Why would the USPS purposely deflate it’s public trust and erode Congressional support?
The American citizenry is left feeling puzzled and ignored. The pubic wishes, on the subject of their post offices, is clear. The question remains why the wishes of the people they serve fall on deaf Congressional ears. Or perhaps a better question would be, when will Congress and the USPS act in the public interest and take the desire of the communities affected into account? When did for the people, by the people, become obsolete for postal officials and our members of Congress? And how did the communities the postal service serves become irrelevant to their business model? How will our nation benefit by the loss of these proud governmental institutions in every community? The American public deserves answers.
Is the postal service being mismanaged? Absolutely. The ultimate manager of the postal service is Congress and if Congress fails the postal service today it fails America tomorrow. The USPS in the United States Code Title 39, Section 101.1, is clearly outlined,“The United States Postal Service shall be operated as a basic and fundamental service provided to the people by the Government of the United States, authorized by the Constitution, created by Act of Congress, and supported by the people. The Postal Service shall have as its basic function the obligation to provide postal services to bind the nation together through the personal, educational, literary, and business correspondence of the people. It shall provide services to all communities. The costs of establishing and maintaining the Postal Service shall not be apportioned to impair the overall value of such service to the people.”
Congress should wake up and smell the coffee. America is telling you that postal workers are America’s most trusted federal employees for many years running - an approval rating Congress hasn’t come close to achieving. Americans will not, nor cannot, tolerate the loss of 120,000 more jobs, especially these well respected positions. Instead of crippling the postal service, Congress (and the people who hired you) would be better served by protecting the one friendly and honorable face of government for America’s communities.

i hate to see anyone lose a job in this diaster of an economy Obama has created but the fact is the USPS is costing us a fortune. You act as if this is the first time government has ignored the wishes of it's citizens, it's not. Were you as outspoken then? Let me guess you or a family member works for the USPS or both. Get rid of your union that has helped to make the USPS a failing entity. They are bleeding the rest of us dry. Americans will survive post offfice closing. We have survived worse. When there was an opportunity to fix the system no one took it. Now you pay the price for your union leadership.
Postal workers are not special. Many have lost jobs did you miss that fact? Did you protest then?

geebrad53 are you giving us you rendition of "Going Postal" Also only the ignorant with little to say resort to name calling to defend their point of view. If you are a USPS employee you are giving them a bad name with your unjustified anger and kid like name calling.
The Obama Administration has proposed a timid, ineffective plan. It provides only temporary fixes by returning to the Postal Service some $7 billion in overpayments it made to the Federal Employees Retirement System since 1971, "deferring for two years a required annual $5.5 billion payment due to U.S. taxpayers", and allowing postage rates to increase by 2 cents. The plan would do nothing to address the underlying, inexorable problem of adjusting to a new communications marketplace. In short, such changes would only push off -- and make more costly -- the day of reckoning when real reforms become inevitable.
You need to check your facts if you can get past the "Going Postal" thing.
