Illegal immigrants, desecrating grave sites, has everyone gone mad? I used to live in granite falls and let me tell you how I feel. Let there be another wal mart. To each his own. He who has the money spend it, build it, and they will come.(When english is a second language then let your bitching come forth, until then keep on working.)
I fought for this country and let me tell you that when you have a thatched hut, no shoes, and nothing to eat well then you guys just might be proud of our global economy "wally world". We just got to get those of you who "have nots" out there to see the bigger picture. BUSH, beer, and taxes. Say how do you like the lottery then?
This is a very depressed area of NC! There are no major corporations paying taxes in the county to make it a wealthy county. MDI moved into the county, but Hickory City quickly annexed that piece of property so they could get the taxes. Furniture was the huge industry in Caldwell county and it bit the dust so to speak. There are people who probably crafted much of the furniture you sit your high and mighty rear ends on in your mansions that were afforded due to corruption and not hard work. Have a little compassion for the little man. Having a WalMart in the area is going to supply people with jobs....granted they may not be top dollar jobs but these people need to work to support their families. Be it working for WalMart or Google they will need work forever.....that is unless you High and Mighty people want to support them on welfare then maybe they can live without WalMart!! Not everyone is an illegal immigrant either....the majority are born and bread Caldwell County natives.

First, the Walmart being built in Granite Falls is a done deal so we all may as well get used to it. However, the removal of the cemetery to make way for Walmart by the developer and the town of Granite Falls is another matter. I have had several conversations with the town manager of Granite Falls in reference to this. I was told the town advertised for over a year as to the forthcoming development of the property. The developer and the town was surprised to receive an "anonymous" phone call as to a cemetery being on the property. I was advised by the town manager no one, including family members, came forth to identify the remains in the 51 unmarked graves. The developer's attorney did a chain of title search which did not reveal a cemetery on the property. They probably didn't want to find anything anyway. In the time period of just a few days, some genealogists and amateur historians using published family histories and records were able to identify the cemetery and the identities of some of the burials therein, one of which was a confederate soldier. I gave this information to the town manager who forwarded it to the developer. Suggestions made that this was a slave cemetery were probably done so to lessen the sentiment of the public and the impact of the removal of the graves. Converations I had with residents and property owners in the area suggested a cemetery on the property many years ago with marked stones during their youth. The remains from the 51 graves were reinterred in Sunset Hills cemetery in Granite Falls. On May 5 I contacted the Granite Falls town manager after the reinterrments had taken place. I drive by this cemetery every day as I live close by. I inquired as to whether the developer was going to place a memorial marker for 51 graves and was told the developer was going to erect a stone. On August 5 I again contacted the town manager as to when a stone was going be placed. The stone was placed in Sunset Hills cemetery on August 15 and it reads as follows: "STARNES TRACT CEMETERY The original cemetery was located on the family homestead approximately 1425 feet northeast of U.S. Highway 321 and U.S. Highway 321-A. This plot contains the reinterred remains of 51 individuals, all of them unknown. The cemetery was relocated May, 2007."

The Town of Granite Falls intends to build a water tower on property on U.S. Highway 321-A which adjoins another "abandoned" cemetery which was deeded to Philadelphia Lutheran Church many years ago. The town intends to restore this overgrown cemetery. In this cemetery are members of the Link, Poovey/Boovey, Hass, Cline and Smith families in MARKED graves. I will be watching the development of this site.

Yes, Target is much better. They are so clean and have nice wide aisles for people to walk and push buggies. Though they are a discount store, they actually have nice clothes and fashion.
Target is awesome.
Walmart puts crap in the aisles and every corner. You can't even push a buggy without bumping into something or someone.

"First, the Walmart being built in Granite Falls is a done deal so we all may as well get used to it."

Yes, this is true. What bothers alot of people is that this deal was done behind closed doors. It seemed that everything fell into place when the property was annexed into the Town of Granite Falls. All of a sudden, Walmart was a "done deal". There is no telling what may have been interested in that property if it was really out in the open about it's availability.

Overall it will be a good thing, which is a sad predicament for Caldwell County to be in. You are right, but because we never had a say then, many of us feel a need to have a say now. That's what this forum is for. At least Walmart will be paying taxes to the city and county, because the area needs the money. As a resident living nearby, Walmart on this particular property presents a whole other can of worms for me, but I can recognize it will be mostly good for others.

Yes, you make a good point that Walmart will actually be paying taxes. That will help.
They will also pay state taxes on utilities unlike another new Caldwell project.

So glad that the BOX STORES are elsewhere:):):)

In out little country town of Lake Lure, NC they not welcomed.

Do come on up and you will see only Mom and Pop stores, stores that know everyone who comes in, stores that care about their customers, stores that are unique....

If you have never been here do see the small web site I set up: www.hickorynutgorgenews.com

wal-mart may bring a few jobs and cheap prices...But most of their goods are imported from over seas manufacturers like china, Mexico etc....They drive outt small loocally owned bsinesses and stores by offering lower prices in the beginning and with them being a multi Billion dollar corp. they can do this with out suffering because small local businesses cant compete and after they drive them out they drive up prices.
WAL_MART IS MORE DETRIMENTAL THAN HELPFUL...pay a little more buy from A TRUE AMERICAN STORE.

Aren't there supposed to be several new retail shops and maybe a Home Depot also being built at that site? I heard there may even be a Chick Filet resturant. I hope there are more shops there, we need places in this county to shop.

I thought the site for Wal Mart in Granite Falls was going to bring a lot more stores than Wal Mart to that shopping center. Has anyone else heard that?

It was stated that approx. 65 acres will be developed commercially along 321 near the Walmart. Is there alot of residential building going on as well or is the housing market slow?
