Hopefully it will benefit this area and not hurt it the way it has some areas, by putting small business out of business. There is also the traffic problems, but oh well progress is progress. Maybe......

Yippee, won't have to run to Hickory or Taylorsville or Lenoir. 'Bout time we got someplace here to shop.

Well we do have Lowe's Home Improvement up the road, don't really need a Home Depot. But some clothing stores or a dry goods store and a decent grocery store, like Harris Teeter would be great, or BiLo.

Has anyone found out what the other stores proposed are going to be? If it is a super Wal-mart it will have a grocery store in it.

I think it is going to be A Super Wal-Mart from what I hear, on 321 North near where that old minature golf course was.

Progress? Believe me this is not progress! This area is depressed enough walmart won't help the situation.

Sorry but i dont share your pessimism. This is close enough to the Bridge that we will actually see some of Catawba County spending tax dollars in Caldwell County. A lot of Hickory residents would rather come to Granite than drive through the mess on Hwy 70.

Dont think you will see a Bi Lo or HT in this development. Super Wallies have groceries so that will be your new grocery store!

About an hour NNW of Charlotte. Come up 321 from Gastonia to Hickory and Granite Falls neighbors Hickory to the north.

Think about why Wal-mart spends millions on commercials trying to promote a good name for themselves. Its no secret Wallie World is bad for business's and the surrounding community (30 mile radius).

There's definitely two sides of the Walmart issue. But, I'll say the Granite Falls Walmart just destroyed the upscale development directly behind the planned Walmart site. The development is called River Bend. Lots of homes for sale, and at good prices too. It's one thing to have a Walmart 1/2 - 5 miles away, and another thing to have one immediately in front of a new subdivision with homes ranging in the $400-1M range.

We were considering River Bend for our next home until we realized today Walmart's going up 500 feet away. I feel sorry for the people who bought into River Bend around 2001 when it was brand new. If you don't mind living next to Walmart, the homes for sale look like a bargain. I'm not so sure about the pricing of the remaining lots. The whole River Bend development felt like it was abandoned with very little activity. Even the River Bend sales office was closed.

As a resident of RiverBend subdivision, I was initially worried about our house value in light of a Walmart so close. Here's why it's going to be good:
1. Good for the town revenues.
2. Town revenues increase, school revenues increase. Better schools= better house values.
3. Our neighborhood is one of the last on Lake Hickory. Gunpowder Creek is the best kept secret in Western NC.
4. We are over 1 mile from Walmart.Way back on the lake. Lake values will not go down. Yes we have to share an entrance with them, but it's only weekend traffic that will be a problem.
5. Even a Walmart is better than the eyesore that was there. Sorry Edgar Starnes, but the farmhouse was looking ill and the trailers and putt-putt were far worse.
We heard there will be a Home Depot and an Applebees in addition to Walmart.

Yes, good point. Look what happened to K'Mart, The Lenoir Mall, and local small business after WallY World moved in. I don't like having only one place to shop in Lenoir. I'd like to have more variety.

Dear listers I have recently learned of the 50 plus unidentified graves that were located in the proposed road way
For the new Granite falls Walmart. It is my understanding all the graves were moved to a nearby
Cemetery. This is an outrage!
Why didnít they move the road instead? Under whose authority were the graves moved?
Is Walmart and or their Contractors aware it is a Felony to desecrate a cemetery in the state of North Carolina ?
If a careful map study and title search was done on the land it would be revealed which family or Church buried their dead in this location. I intend to enlist the help of other Genealogists and find this out.
As a person with ancestors from Caldwell county I am devastated to think that quite possibly
These unidentified graves might be my ancestors or the ancestors of someone I know.
When Walmart comes to town the entire way of life changes in that Community. Mom and Pop businesses cannot compete and we lose our HomeTown atmosphere as one by one they are forced to close.
Walmart brings low prices at the cost of the the entire community. Walmart brings jobs to the Community yes, but they also pay unfair wages and poor benefits ,and they have been known to hire illegal immigrants.
Now it seems they have stepped into a whole new area of Community change. By failing to honor and respect the remains of those fifty or more yet unidentified Caldwell county citizens Walmart has shown
They will do anything to keep prices low. Would it have really cost that much more to move the road and put a fence around the Cemetery?
I intend to find out who these graves belonged to and publicize the information. I hope the families will
File a judgement and make Walmart pay for its actions
I stopped shopping at Walmart years ago and I urge every citizen of Caldwell county and her neighboring counties to boycott existing Walmarts and never set foot in this new store. Do you really want to drive over a desecrated cemetery to get there?

I have just learned that the remains of the Dead were reinterred four bodies/sets of remains to a grave at the new location they were moved to.Walmart or no walmart would you want this to happen to your loved ones remains.
Would Sam Walton's family want his remins disineterred and mingled with those of three other persons and then dumped in a new grave.

In a few short days myself and a handfull of researchers have determined the chain of ownership of this property.
By alla ccounts this was the simon Bisnar/Besnar burial Ground and the land transferred to Sarah Starnes who had two sons (perhaps by Besnar ) before marrying a Mr Tolbert.
It is Sarah's descendants who later sold the land to the developers.
Family records indicate Catherine Bowman Starnes was buried at the old Besnar graveyard in the 1860's .
I also believe that Catherien and Leathy Bowman who died of typhoid Fever in 1899
and were my great Aunst were also buried there.
There were Mebers of the Besnar,Bowman,Starnes,Poole,To lbert and other Families buried there.
