I'm shocked that funeral expenses are not currently covered for troopers killed in the line of duty. The family has to pay for the funeral? That is shameful.

U S Bureau of Justice Assistance has $ 303,064.00 death benefit for officer's killed in line of duty. And that amount increases when the death occurs on a federal highway.

I must say that I am rather shocked that the families of any law enforcement officer (or any other public servant) killed in the performance of their duties would be responsible for covering the funeral expenses.

I certainly hope this bill will be passed. An accidental death is certainly different, but Trooper Blanton was killed while doing a service for the State.

Amazing, do we have to have a law in place in order to do the right thing? Seems like there should be some sort of "Trooper Fund" for things like this. Does it really take enacting a law to make it happen? Killed in the line of duty. Kinda makes you wonder doesn't it? Hhmmmm, spend thousands of dollars and countless hours to enact a law to pay funeral costs -or- simply create a "Fund" for such devastating things as this.

The Eastern Band has a set amount that is allocated to each member of the tribe to cover funeral costs. It is not an issue of refusing to pay. The Eastern Band is a government and is bound by the rules and regulations regarding such items.

That is appalling.

But the state, county, and city govt jobs are not
taken because of pay or benefits. It is for the love of the job.

Remember the AFD family that did not have enough
insurance to pay for Paxten Mitchell's treatments.

Aheville City has the worst benefits for any employee, whether a fireman, police officer of
elevator operator.

You have to be a dedicated person to work in the LEOs field or the fire dept.

And I am grateful that there are people that work
in the APD, BCSD, AFD, and the NCSHP.

The Eastern Band can add a new law also, this was one of theirs as much as the other people of NC.
Step up to the plate even if NC steps up also, this woman and child lost their care giver protecting us as the old Bible SchooL song, RED, AND YELLOW, BLACK AND WHITE.

To quote another poster; "bull#$%!! The tribe has the ability to pass any special legislation they wish to help with such costs. Also, the casino has a special fund for charity donations. It's amazing they can complain about so many things as a tribe, but have not helped one of their own with funeral expenses.

This isn't about his blood line or his heritage or who his relatives are. It's about being a North Carolina State Trooper killed in THE LINE OF DUTY.

Leave it to the Fed's to provide just enough to have someone cremated, a couple extra death certificates made for legalities and a posting in the obits...

What is really bad is that the state steps in and makes all these elaborate(not that they don't deserve every bit of it) funeral plans then leaves the family to pay for it.

The family is not going to have to pay out of their pocket for this burial. Kind and generous people from all over the place have given to help this family. It's a shame that it takes a law whether it be federal or state to pay for trooper funeral costs. After all, not all NC State Troopers killed in the line of duty are of Cherokee blood line.

I agree I dont think the family should have to pay for something like this. I think the KILLER should be the one to have to pay the bill...even if he goes to prison either for life or death if he makes any money while waiting it should go to the bill.
