I found that their tactics and contracts are actually better than most of the "national" chains. You think this is bad; go try out LA Fitness, 24-Hour, or Lifetime. Good luck.

The staff is the staff, it's a gym in Lake Jackson. Minimum wage = minimum service, no matter what product you are selling. Next time you are in Sugar Land, try Houstonian Lite see what $1400/yr dues feels like. Good but still not worth it.

The place is nice, clean, and new. Far less expensive than Family Fitness with better hours/access.

It has it's faults, but still worth the $35/mo vs. FF $55/mo.

I can't understand why my comment is the only one disagreed with (must have been a powerhouse employee). The equipment at the LJ Rec center is extremely limited along with the space, however the price is right. As far as Powerhouse, I finally went and talked to the GM in person, after several attempts to contact them via email. Brett and I spoke face to face and he listened to my complaints, most of which were the obnoxious music they play there early in the morning (seems to be a bleed over from the evening before). Music that profanes God's name, praises adultery, and drug/alcohol use. Not exactly what I want jammed in my ears when keeping my body fit (garbage in, garbage out). He has made an attempt to rectify this but slippage still occurs from time to time. I agree with the post comment that the equipment is nice and a good variety. However I do not go to the gym to be entertained, I don't need multiple TV's and a blaring stereo, it's all junk anyway. This place had an extremely rough start and they are fighting an uphill battle to get on track. Honesty is the best policy when dealing with customers, the truth always comes out. You made the right call sir, I would not want to be tied to any place for two years. Especially without a proven track record.

Ill start by saying that i have been a member of various gyms for the past 15 years. This gym is BY FAR the worst gym i have ever worked out at. And this is why:
ABSOLUTELY NO CUSTOMER SERVICE
EQUIPMENT IS NOT MAINTAINED.
Don't even think about getting help on the phone or in person. Every time i tried to speak with someone about my account i was ignored or got a run around. It literally took weeks to finally speak with a manager. Once i finally did there was no accountability and no answers.
Over the year period i worked out there at least half of the Cardio machine were broken and never fixed. Most of the time they sat without any warning they were broken. Someone could have really been hurt.
There are plenty on good gyms out there. If you care at all about customer service, friendly professional staff, managers that can answer basic questions about your contract then DO NOT join this GYM. I Wish i had seen this thread before i joined and saved myself the hassle and the money. I would have rather lit my money on fire than give it to this gym. I really cannot believe they are still in business.
If you do decide to join ill be looking for your post in this thread soon.

Worst gym I've ever been to. Class instructors never show up, the whole gym is disgusting and never cleaned (great way to get sick). Its also the most expensive in the area, oh yah if you're a day late with your payment have fun with that extra 20 dollar charge ontop of the outrageous monthly fee. DO NOT GO TO THIS GYM. AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Yes, I was in the same boat as I was waiting for this gym to open, and in the meantime, accepted a job in Colorado. I went through all the requested procedures for canceling my membership, and I thought this issue was resolved until today, 2011, as I receive a collection notice from an agency. Does anyone know of any email address affiliated with this gym? I have sorted through my past emails, and it appears that the emails I have in regards to my canceled contract are non-existent. I paid this gym for almost an entire year because they, for some reason would not cancel my membership, but finally did. I have just been informed as of now, that my contract was never canceled, therefore accruing debt.

Not sure if you still need this but this is the owners personal email. I have heard of many others with the same problem. This gym is a "meat market" nothing more. They are not big on customer service. My monthly rate is good or I would had left a long time ago. When something better comes along, rest assured I will be gone. Hope this address serves you well.

Jessica, you have very valid points, I'm a member there and I absolutly LOVE how nice everyone is. The trainers are so helpful and non-judgmental, the classes are fun, the facility is very clean and well maintained... And if everyone would just give it another chance, they would see that Powerhouse is a great place to work out.

Listen I was one of the people that built the powerhouse in lake Jackson. Seriously do you all have nothing better to do then bitch?? If you are not happy then don't sign up to a gym that was not open yet!!! There was a lot of stuff that went wrong for one the Tile guy's left when none of the locker rooms were done! The plumber's took forever. And yes they brought in the equipment into the gym when they were waiting for the plumbing to be done they had no choice due to the truck's delivering them on a cretin date! And Brett is seriously one of the nicest people that I know so as for the "name calling" I call BS on that one!! And yeah if you all are seriously going to sit at home probably on you fat butts and bitch about everything and anything then you all have a lot more problems then a gym.

Natalie,
I was a Powerhouse customer for 2 1/2 years. The only reason I stayed was because I got a good rate. This summer Family Fitness worked with me and gave me a good number and I joined. Cold not had been happier to quit Brett and his gym. Go to Family Fitness and talk to Jeff or Jon, they are both very kind and honest men and will treat you fair. Sorry you had to learn the hard way like I did. I can't wait for Powerhouse to die.

this gym suck. they lie about the agrement and they always try to charge more even if you do automatic withdraw. they are very dishonest and when you find out about the truth, it will be too late. they charged me $31 for yearly membership and i only been there for 3 month. late fees are $20 they added it when they feel like it. also if you are a couple, they will do 2 seperate membership without telling because this way they can charge you more.i normally pay $ 81 for me and my wife a month, i looked on my bank and i saw the withdraw $197. i called to ask why they could explained, so they hang up on me. i went to cancel my membership because i dont feel like dealing with kids, they try to make it impossible to cancel. they told me they need $75 cancellation which i agreed, and once i agreed on it, they said i have to mail the cancelation application in priority mail and then they will decide if they cancel ot not. screw them its my money and they aint giving a membership for free. if you want go there make sure you read my review well and make notes so you can see what i am talking about. they will never mention anything to you, but since you read this you can surprise them about how much you know about them.

I joined in 2009, and did not like it in the least. Few class offerings, rude staff...I switched here to escape from Family Fitness, which isn't much better. I cancelled once I relocated, and paid the cancellation fee after proof I moved. They still continued to charge me. I tried again and they made me pay another $75. So, I should have noticed sooner but 2 months later they were STILL drawing membership dues out of my account. Things were settled quickly and my money was reinstated from my first cancellation date only after I threatened to contact an attorney. Reporting to the BBB didn't seem to worry them. It is sad...this could have had potential since Lake Jackson is sorely lacking for a decent gym!
DO NOT SIGN UP FOR IT

I was dumb enough to sign up with my boyfriend for a year-long membership at the Powerhouse Gym in Lake Jackson. It wasn't a good idea... nor do I think it was worth all the money we had to spend on it.
One thing after another happened, and then my boyfriend and I couldn't afford it. Unfortunately, we'd signed the contract, which is set to screw a person over from the beginning, as you're not allowed to get out of the contract unless A)You're being relocated, B) Military 0rders C) Disability or D) The end of term has come up-- If you have not time to go, that won't be a valid excuse... and also, ACCORDING TO THIS GYM, BEING POOR IS NOT A REASON TO LEAVE THE GYM either! You can, however, pay even MORE money when you are finally able to do so.
Oh, and that's the thing about this gym... the people who work there try so hard to get money from you. On that note, keep in mind that even if you sign up for a year, they will still continue to TAKE YOUR MONEY FOR UP TO THREE YEARS until you request a cancellation.
It costed well over $1,244 for both of us. I feel as if we've been robbed.
The only good thing I got out of it is that now I pay more attention to what I sign... but never, ever, NEVER would I sign up for this place again. Be reasonable peopel... DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE I MADE, I URGE YOU TO CHOOSE ANOTHER GYM, If not, work out at home. Save your money people, IT IS NOT WORTH IT!!!

Ummm IM pretty sure if YOU built Powerhouse then YOU wouldnt take to Pissed off customers the way your talking. No wonder no one is happy with that gym, because they have IDIOTS LIKE YOU working for them. You DO NOT talk to customers like that. and im pretty sure Brett and his wife Becky wouldnt appreciate you doing that. So maybe it would be a great recommendation from someone to get rid of you and maybe people would stay. Because I can promise you, that your little BITCH FIT comment did no good for Brett and his business

Powerhouse is trash. Half the training staff doesn't know a damn thing. Family Fitness has much better customer service as well as the best training staff in the area.
