Do people who "love" their confederate flags really understand what was going on in the South under that flag? Slavery, suppression, cruelty, etc....
Why would anyone want to display such a symbol is beyond me. If they would be really honest with themselves, they would have to admit it stands for nothing. It's not a time to be proud of. I'm sure
most, if not all Germans, would not want the nazi flag displayed either. As Americans we seem to have the notion that we can do or say anything. We're like little children who want their way or they throw temper tantrums. So Alvin teens, GET OVER YOURSELVES, THE CIVIL WAR IS OVER....CONFEDERACY LOST....THE FLAG IS NO MORE. FLY A FLAG THAT MEANS SOMETHING, THE "AMERICAN FLAG" THAT REPRESENTS ALL OF US.(BUT DO SO IN A PROPER MANNER) WITH RESPECT. LOOK THAT WORD UP...IT MEANS SOMETHING TOO.

God invented idiots, that was for practice. Then he invented school boards. While the South enslaved African Americans which is deplorable and morally reprehensible, the North slaughtered Irisih immigrants through starvation wages and insufferable working conditions. The slave owners had equity in their slaves, paid taxes on them etc. Northern industrialists had no such constraints with Irish who were left to root hog or die, since there were plenty more "free" stiffs to replace those who died, were crippled or had their health ruined by the working conditions. Are we supposed to rename the Amusement Park, Five Flags Over Texas. The treatment of slaves was no worse than the treatment of Irish immigrants by industrialists or the treatment, genocide, actually of Native Americans by the government who didn't confer civil rights on them until nearly sixty years after the 14th amendment. Get over it. People speciously try to equate the Confederate flag as a symbol of KKK which is no more valid than equating the German Flag to the Swastika.

On Mar 2, 1861; the U. S. Congress approved this amendment to the constitution:
"No amendment shall be made to the Constitution which will authorize or give to Congress the power to abolish or interfere, within any State, with the domestic institutions thereof, including that of persons held to labor or service by the laws of said State"
This can be verified at the U. S. House of Representatives web page at
www.house.gov/house/Constitution/Amendnotrat....
Given that the north was willing to amend the constitution to protect slavery if that would coax the seceding states back into the union, I don't buy the popular belief that the war was over slavery.

For anyone that cares to read this, I will type a few chose words. I am a Veteran of the U.S. Army. I served in Desert Storm. Protecting everyones flags!!!!!! It is due to an abundant amount of ignorance that people write nasty little notes like some of these. We delete them usually after the first word you type I knoe your race!, religious preference, and what grade you got in your History classes in school, So waste not another negative word, We will win this war, The South Will Rise Again, and probably hover over your sorry head for a bit, so think before you type, it is kind of like thinking before you speak . You probably don't do that either. Thanks to all you others for your support, we do appreciate, your words of encouragement. God Bless You All. Happy Holidays From Alvin, Texas. The Home of the uneducated teachers that are being paid, to teach for a standardized test, and not for a future generation that will be taking care of you. In your elderly years, provided you last that long!!!! YEE HAA!!!!!!!!

Well, what is the difference in allowing the KKK to carry their symbols? Dont like that but what is the difference? Some people have Pit Bulls and some have chihuahuas. Whoever has a Confederate flag now sure didnt own any slaves, their parents didnt either. Aw hell, why to explain,,,some just gripe to gripe like it is racism that the woman who killed her 5 kids didnt get the death penalty, no matter the law something didnt happen...Damn.

"The rebel flag is a proud flag. And does not mean the same for every one. If you must think of it as raceism then go ahead, you have the right to your opion. But dont think for a minute that the civil war was fought over slavery, it wasn't. It was fought over government, the government of states that did not want to be governed. The REBEL FLAG is red and white, not black and white, so lets leave race out of it.

africans sold their own people into slavery, and blamed the rebel flag"

The Confederate Flag means a lot of different things to different people. For many, slavery has nothing to do with it; it was about a group of states with common economic interests that believed they could better govern themselves than Washington could. Never forget that its always about economics. And for the record how many of the ships loaded with slaves flew the confederate flag? Which flag did they fly?

All anybody has to do is research the Civil War, the largest slave trading port was in Rhode Island, in the North, and when the slave ships docked, US flags flew over the ships. Throught the 18th century 60-90 percent of slaves were controlled by the Rhode Island Merchants. Northeners were the ones that decided my ancestors (Indians) should be exterminated. Lets not forget NY who also led the market of slavery. Even after african slave trading was banned in 1808, the north still smuggled over 40,000 slaves a year. Slavery was not a product of the south as many like to believe, but by wealthy northern merchants. Abe Lincoln himself even admitted to the north being just as responsible as the south. It is a documented fact that the confederate states outlawed african slave trade in the south completely before the war even began. So that flag has nothing to do with race. If the african americans want to be upset, be upset at the northeners who started the slave trading, and the africans that sold their own blood.

the confederate flag is not racist. i live in bermingham alabama and all it is is southern heritage. and i could see how people think it is racist cause nazis and kkk members use it as a symbolism of slavery. but it is not racist all it is is southern history and heritage. and that is why the confederate flag flys in front of my house every day

I am white and from the south and ashamed to be associated with people who support this racist symbol. Might as well face it though -- in TX, we're surrounded by ignorant, Bush-loving, fundamentalist red-necks!!! There are small pockets of enlightened individuals here and there however.

Have any friends who aren't white? Ask them how the flag makes them feel?

So If I can't have a confederate flag...I want to see all those mexico flags gone!! Who in the hell in there right mind would allow those sacks of shit to come over to america and fly there damn flag! For the people that say oh you shouldn't say that...I want you to take yourself to mexico and fly an american flag...you know you wouldn't cause those mexicans would stick that flag up your ass...I say no to the mexcian flag in american!!

Only the right believe in freedom of speech -- doesn't apply to the left. Tolerance and differences in opinion are in extreme short supply among leftists. Ex. Stalin, Hitler, Mao, PolPot, Castro, Chavez and the likes. A freedom loving man like Bush would have been really popular among any of these guys, just as he is with mojorizene.

Umm. Irish immigrants, by the way, came to America voluntarily. African-Americans were forced onto ships and shackled. Immigrants usually come willingly. I don't think any African that was placed on a ship actually voluntarily came here. Also, I don't think anyone equates the current German flag with the Swastika since the flag doesn't have a Swastika on it.

I think a lot of white people like to and have some need to believe that every slave was sold into slavery by another African. It makes it easier to believe that, than to believe ones ancestors did a horrible thing to other people. That way they can have complete deniabilty. It's true that SOME were sold into slavery by other Africans, but not all or the majority. Even still, look beyond who sold who and look at why. Did the Africans who sold other Africans, tell or give a sales pitch to plantation owners convincing them that slave labor was the way to go for their work needs? I doubt that.

Do I believe that every person who defends the Confederate flag is a racist? No. It just means that some are not looking at the whole meaning of that flag and what it stood for to the majority. Still, I defend your right to fly that flag. Just be aware that to some of us it's offensive, and just because you say it isn't doesn't mean that the rest of us are stupid or wrong.

You can serve your point without useing derogatory words. Or by insulting others who have had the bravery to put up their opinions. You are insulting someones intelligence by being hateful which makes you sound like the ignorant one.

I am not racist at all. my little sister is black. but i have no problem with the confederate flag. if people knew the true meaning was just the simple fact of rebeling and not rasicm it would be fine. The should be aloud in school; especially when they let thugs were gang colors and girls wear some of the sluttiest closes i have ever seen.

This great country was the loser. Who really knows how far back this war set us, and the flag of the confederacy was not the flag of this country.
