This type of behavior is unacceptable. A lesson does need to be learned by these young people, "young people" being the key words, especially since I understand that they were warned not to do the prank.---THANK GOD NO ONE WAS HURT! But, I'm sure the young people were just letting out excitement that it was the end of the school year, and that the seniors would soon be graduating, etc. There is no doubt about the fact that the students (especially seniors as role models) should have obeyed the warning. I'm sure they didn't expect the prank to get out of hand, nor for the punishment to be so harsh. However, not letting them have the honor to walk across the stage, after putting in 12+ years of study, for this type of behavior possibly is a bit too strict, and possibly should be revisted. But, I do feel the students should be dealt with---maybe having them clean up the cafeteria--, and/or write a final report on why they should not have done the prank, etc.??. I believe that children should behave properly, although that is just not always the case. It was good of the young man to admit that he had the idea---altough a bad one, and that he did not take place in throwing the food. I believe that they know "for sure" that what they did was wrong (excited or not), and that it has consequences. Well, anyway I would like to think that they regret doing what they did, and not just because they got in trouble for it. A message does need to be sent that children (people)need to abide by the rules though.

I agree that this type of behavior is unacceptable. I also agree that they were letting out some excitement, and they should be proud of their years in school and accomplishments and want to celebrate. Hey, I know I did. This is sort of a catch-22 for me. I'm a kindergarten teacher. I've taught for 20 years. I can see the boy's side, the principal's side, and the parent's side. That's the way it always is for me. I'm so proud that the boys admitted it. That's one of the most important things I try to instill in my 5 and 6 year olds. The principal has to show that inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. As a parent of a 20 year old, I would have hated it if I couldn't see her walk during graduation. I guess the bottom line for me is that we want the best for the children and it's a tough job to know just what it is that we can do for them to make them happy, successful, and respectful.
