Can someone tell me the apartment complex towing laws for Tampa, FL? I was towed for dbl parking. I parked a little over the white line...next to my husband's vehicle because the car on the other side was very close to where I was parking. It was towed 10.2 miles away & i was charged $201 to pick it up. I am livid.

Wow. First of all, turn off the caps lock. Second, try to write in at least a 3rd grade level of grammar before you label others as idiots. Third, face the fact that you're a low life vulture.

@ Les Claypool: very well said Sir. I just wanted to chime in and say a few words as it relates to this thread here. I just happened upon it after making attempts to search for parking complex laws in Wisconsin state. I just purchased a vehicle last night, 10-17-2010 @ 9:45PM. It was my intintions to take the truck down to the DMV to get it titled over to me and transfer license plates from my old broken down vehicle to my truck. Well that never happened because I go outside this AM, mainly due to having a funny feeling, and yep you guessed it, my newly purchased truck was no where in site. It's going to cost me, let's see here, $265.00 for the intial tow, plus $32.00 for everyday after that. I spoke to my complex

Then if it is so damn expensive for them to run .. maybe they need to be in a different business.

$263 is highway robbery, I don't care what time you have to get your lazy butt out of bed. Someone making over $30/hour still has to work a full day to pay that sum.

I am very upset about my apartment complex and towing company. Please take a few minutes and read my email. I want to see if other people have gone through what I experienced and to see what I can do so this doesn't happen to other people. When I think about it, this is scam. People just taking complete advantage of other people.
I live in the park timber apartments and my car was towed because I was apparently "double parked" where as I know I parked my car where my tires where on the white line but did not cross it. Which in no way can hinder from another car from parking beside my car. but the apartment "courtesy patrol" called the towing company who then towed it but Pro Tow towing. Their towing lot is 2.5 miles away from my apartment complex. They charged me $263 to get my car back. How can you charge $263 to tow 2.5 miles? thats $105 per mile!
I have towed my car before to a mechanic and they charged me $8 a mile.
I am also convinced that the apartment complex gets a cut from the towing company because pro tows number is posted on the signs in the apartment complex. my car has a parking permit, couldnt they just take a minute and call me to tell me that car was parked improperly? couldnt they give at least one warning?
I dont know who is more to blame for being so sleazy and completely taking advantage of people. The apartment complex management or the towing company. They are both obviously profiting from the situation and abusing loop holes somewhere.
I am on a very tight budget and this really put a ding on my bank balance. Are there other people who have gone through this? What can we do to stop towing companies like pro tow from rippng people off?!
please help.
I have a simalar problem im currently changing apartments because the bad managment wont fix our apartment I have been fighting them for 6 months about the black mold because I have two 3yo and a 7 month old who develped asthma from it they violated my lease by failing to maintain a safe and healthy enviorment. Today we talked to them in the afternoon and they asked us to move our car to cut down a tree (keep in mind we still have keys and are still moving) I go to pickup car in the evening and its been towed for illigal parking. Im pissed because they had no right to tow me from my spot and they have spray painted new numbers right after the shady towtruck from el paso towing sliped out with my car. No one wants" to talk to me so now they have to talk to my lawer. Im in the army and currently being medicaly retired from injurys I got while deployed so I cant move place to place in person like they want but ill post what my lawyer says word for word. I know this much even know they abuse laws that work in there favor there are other laws that put limits on them so not to abuse them without penaltys.

I get the whole point of towing a vehicle that is causing space issue and taking up two spaces and causeing a loss of parking, but come on people. If a person is on a white line or even a couple inches over, is this really a reason to cost a person this amount of money.? NO. It is taking advantage of people who probably have trouble paying rent each months and worse if they are young and have children. This type of money could keep a family from eating and there needs to be some margain of error to allow minor amounts of space on or over the line. is the spaces are so small where they cause an issue then maybe they should widen the spaces. This is basically squeexing cars into spot cuz they didnt build an extra space and squeexing as many in for profit to the apt management company. Again , i get the rules but a good management company caring for the tenants and ones that work trying to cause less issues would not do this, but obviously some apts and management companies are just out for themselves and their profit margain and have issues within their communities. Get a new manager and lease agents who care for their tenants and dont move where they have this rule cuz they obviously have prior issues they lack how to handle and are not to educated themselves. How to fix. rip the sign down and take a picture. first make sure they dont have a pic of sign. this is what I did and they brought my car back. as I was waiting i saw the sign guy come out but, I took pic of no signage first. Play their stupid game. if misspelled, ooops not checking .

I remember when something like that happened to me too, at the apartments i used to leave, the gave us some kind of permits that need to be hanging on the rearview. Well, one time my wife sent me to the store to get some groceries and my kid went with me, when i got back to my apartment i didnt realize that my parking permit was gone, i believe my kid must've taken it off. At the time i was young and had no experience at all, so i wasent making enough money, I used to work at a tire shop and I had money problems, so when rick towers took my lil sentra, I felt devastated cuz they wanted 300 to get my car back and i was already paying 500 a month for rent, so I went and tried to explained the tower company my situation, but they didn't care, and they even told me that it was gonna be 100 extra per day if i didn't get my lil car. Well, finally I got it back and i was 300 dlls more in debt than before, and i felt that I was never gonna get out of my financial problems because I was not getting enough hours at work, but finally i decided to investigate this towing companies and like Bill P said, it is not the drivers fault cuz they have families to support and all of that, so what did I do, I made the company pay me back for the 300 dlls that I have to pay. I waited for the towe truck every night from 2am to 4am to realize that they never send the same guy to the same apartments, so every night i nailed all 4 tires of the truck without being seen and the company got new tires from the shop i used to work at, so I had to work a lil extra hours and i was able to save a lil money to finally buy a house and get my family out of the apartments.
I believe that these towing companies are not doing any good to people who live in apartments, so I dont see these people have to do any good for towing companies. Eye for an Eye...

I am wondering if an apartment complex has to provide a certain number of visitors parking space based on the number of units it has. My new car was towed because the purchase was made after the office was closed. I drove around the entire apartment community 2x's looking for a visitors spot. There were several open parking for residence with a sticker but no available visitors spots. I looked up the complex size and it stated we have 482 units a very large complex and only 75 designated visitor spots I believe that is a violation of some code especially since we have to pay for stickers to go on the windshield.

I live in an older complex in irving and they just towed my car at 3am yesterday because i didn't have a " parking permit ". know my neighbor told the guy we had only been here for a few days and it was clear that I had out of state plates on the car. My neighbor came to wake me up and the tow truck hooked my car up and ripped out of the parking lot. Now the point of parking permits is so residents have a place to park and visitors use the lot away from the buildings, i get that. BUT at 3am there was a car every other space so parking was NOT an issue. Needless to say I was beyond pissed and called the number on the signs in the complex to tell them that they illegally towed my car and there was a sticker on it and if he had taken the time to look he would have seen it on the drivers window six inches away from my registration and inspection. Now as I said I am from another state and where I am from you are not allowed to put ANYTHING on your windshield but state stickers. So After i explained that to the woman on the phone and told her no where in my lease dose it say where the stupid sticker needs to be, I was placed on hold for a min and told my car was on the way back to me. i told her to keep it I was calling the police and reporting it stolen and I hoped that ripping it out of the space damaged it because i was going to the court house first thing in the morning. 5 mins later my car was dropped in front of the leasing office in a fire lane and the tow truck took off. surprised he didn't try to come tow it again for being parked there. Anyway the point of this long story is that if you where actually illegally towed you can file a small claims suite for free and collect $1,500 from the towing company.

Which was Southwest Auto Tow in this case.

It's extortion. Plain and simple. I visited with a police officer who told me the apartment complexes get kickbacks and the tow trucks rack up a lot of money at the minor infractions of people who just want to get home after working long hours or taking care of sick children or just tons of stuff to get done so these sharks profit off people's oversights. I am working on getting legislation passed to put these money grubbers out of this business via extortion. I can understand the need for tows but when the prices are overinflated and the tow trucks are going hunting like this-this is just wrong. I believe reasonable notice by apartment managers is appropriate. I was given a two hour notice for a non-clearly defined violation. The notice was given at midnight and car towed at 2:00 a.m. I go to bed at 10 p.m. The officer who is also wanting legislation passed against this extortion told me it is a hyper vigilant move made to get money out of people in an unethical way. My attitude toward my apartment complex has gone from stellar to slum lord since this occurred. Is that a way to treat your tenants? Also, I was advised to sue the people responsible. I was not given proper notice and I do not believe I was parked illegally. These antics are bad, just bad. These are not police officers with this much power, but money grubbing jerks that operate at a ruthless level. Believe me, if we continue to allow this to continue we are guilty of complacency. There is an election coming up-contact the candidates. Be tenacious and we will see justice in this matter.

tow companies and apartment complexes make money off you from the rent and these low life tow companies do nothing but look for a car that they can own . i was a manager and they towed my car and had to return it . we fired them . this whole thing about them getting out of bed to go get a wrong doers car is bull . these guys are legally steeling cars and now they are trying to defend themselves online. they are a bunch of thieves driving around looking for any chance they can get to get you car. look at it that way!

Just got my car back wondering how I will pay for it when I get my credit card statement but these tow truck drivers don't give a crap they are counting on u or maybe praying for u to make a mistake and leave your car for long enough so they can tow it. It's all bullsh*t that they don't make enough money. The guy that towed my car was bring another car in just when I got to the lot. That's within 40 min since the lot is only 3 miles away from where the car was towed. My car was picked out of the 4 cars that were parked there without a permit. I had to look for the damn sign Which I found about half a block away facing away from the apartment complex. See how these sons of bit*hes make money

Know what your rights are. If you're towed in Texas for inspection and/or tags, then you must be provided with a notice, either in person with a witness or by certified mail.

MOST are not in compliance with this law and those that aren't should be fined. I had a car towed from an apartment complex a few years back while I was out of town on vacation. I would have paid nearly the price of a used car if I hadn't contacted a lawyer...

There's an ethics lesson in all of this, regardless the law. Taking someone's means of generating income (especially in areas with little/no transit systems) is at the root of this issue. It stands to reason that if one can't pay for repairs to get a car legal, then they can't afford to pay the exorbitant fees of non-consent towing.

And the argument 'Comment' made justifying these fees is lame at best. If tow companies can operate on 'x' amount on a consent tow, then they can operate for 'x' amount on non-consent, since they are towing the car on what is essentially, their own time!

These laws need to be revised because this practice, while sometimes legit, is more often than not, predatory in nature.

Husband woke this am to his truck gone from his parking spot! This is at Sun Chase Apt in Odessa TX. He was parked in an end spot, no parking spot to his left. L shaped parking. The truck to his right was parked on the line, so to not be a JERK he parked a bit to the left putting his tire on the line so the owner could get into their truck. The other night while talking to me on the phone he saw to cars get towed away, he thought re-pos..nope they have a scam going on that they come on in after midnight and start towing! The recently re painted the parking spots! they are about a foot more narrow now than they were, putting them right at that 8.8ft smallest allowed width legal size! Great if you own a VOLT! Nit great when you are there with your work truck.$300.00 later he has his truck and his heart meds that were in it! He worked a 16 hr day got in at 2am and left his meds and wallet in his truck by accident, then to wake to it being STOLEN by the towing company! So 2am they are out looking for people parked on the lines? Something is not right here!!! They also have black mold growing in their apartment! waiting 3 months to get it removed no he is sick!! Enjoy your lease with this establishment!
