Got to agree with Rank Stranger. I've been a memorabilia collector of Norris Dan items and books and such for years. There was nobody "buried" in the concrete. This seems to be the same story at every large construction site and especially dams. I had to smile at all the descriptions of "my cousin", "my grandfather", etc., etc., told me. Typical urban legend stuff to a tee. Whatever you were TOLD, is false. Pure and simple. Don't rely on what someone told you as the truth. It just isn't so.

That is interesting that you collect Norris Dam items. What is the most interesting thing that you have run across? I have bought a few things off of Ebay but they mostly just have postcards.

Well, ok, I lied- I don't really HATE to.
But that thing about guys falling into the wet concrete and being buried alive- it's an urban legend. Not only did that tale not originate with Norris Dam... it just isn't true.
For one... structural defects as large as a man would NEVER be allowed in a concrete pouring like a dam.
For two... concrete is more dense than the human body. I.e., you can not sink completely in it.
And that latter point is also true of quicksand... but try convincing your average mouth-breather of it. You won't get far.
Hey- and did ya'll ever hear about those catfish at the bottom of Norris Lake that are big enough to eat a man? Well...
I really hate to tell you my grandfather was over the building of the clinch river bridge that is on the interstate on the way to Clinton, there is a colored man buried in the concrete under the water, because my grandfather was the one that broke the news to his wife, and there was no way to get to him..

Supposely they sent divers to look in the water, and they came back shaking because the catfish were bigger than they were.. I think that was around the mid 70's when they done that.. I think they outta do it again now. To see whether or not its true!!

Yeah they hung a black guy from it back in the day. It's located off of Briceville Hwy near bill black lane. go over that bridge like your going toward teno loop and before you go that way cut left and there's a flat area. Walk the tracks a few feet and you'll see a piece of wood that's notched on both sides.

I find this hard to believe. The water is only a few feet deep right there and I have never seen at catfish in that area-too cold for most of them.

R U GOD NO so u don't know what happened

Well i don't hate to break it to u but it is true. My uncle helped with Clinton Bridge and he asked what would happen if he fell in while they was pouring the concrete and they said they would write down his name and what time he fell in.

. If your grandfather told you that he's a liar. Plain and simple. There is no black man buried under the bridge, there also aren't any Catfish that big down there. In every state around any big body of inland water there is always some rumor of catfish as big as a car. And the same is true about people buried in concrete. At the hoover dam wouldn't you believe it, there is a Black man buried in the dam because he fell in and couldn't get out. Lol its always a dam or a bridge and its always a black man.

The gates of Norris Dam on Tennessee's Clinch River are closed March 4 after 2½ years of construction that has cost $32,269,027 and the lives of eight men (962 others have sustained injuries on a project that has required 16,977,720 man-hours of labor). Named for the Republican U.S. senator from Nebraska who championed the TVA, the dam rises 265 feet, extends 1,860 feet across, and has two giant hydroelectric generators that produce the first electric power in the eastern end of the Tennessee Valley, with a transmission line to the 9-year-old Wilson Dam (see environment, 1937).
