This is taken from the Des Moines Register Obituaries and gives some insight into what a tradgedy this is.

Heather was born to Doug and Vicki (Kuehnhold) Campbell on September 16, 1989 in Des Moines, Iowa. She attended Urbandale High School and graduated from Walnut Creek Campus in West Des Moines.

She was a current student of Des Moines Area Community College where she was pursuing a degree in nursing. After becoming a RN, she planned to travel to New York to receive special training for the care and treatment of children with Autism, Asperger syndrome, and other related learning disabilities. Her goals were to live and work on the West Coast, provide support for infants and children with developmental disabilities, and travel to Africa to aid challenged children.

Recently Heather wrote: "After several years on a quest to find myself, I have come to the single conclusion that I was born to make a difference in everyday life and to fight for the children in this nation. I have only dipped my toes into the care and aid of intellectual disabilities, but in my heart, I know this is the path I am supposed to follow."

Heather was an innocent casualty of the tragic domestic violence incident that occurred June 11, 2010 in rural Calhoun County, Iowa. Actual voice recorded evidence indicates that Heather refused to leave a friend in danger despite grave risk to her own safety. In spite of pleas for her to flee, Heather, as was typical of her character, did not abandon her friend, and this selfless act resulted in the loss of her own life.

I have been physically ill since reading Heather's mom's phone recorded the tragedy as a message. My empathy to the three families and friends involved.
