If you've had one job, you are either very satisfied, very boring, or (I suspect) very young. I've lived quite awhile, and had lots of different opportunities to serve in many different occupations. Along the way, I've learned a lot of things and developed a lot of skills. Sorry if that offends you.
Speaking of divine appointments, check out Hebrews 9:27, 28. It's a doozy.

Ladies and gentlemen, the point of these forums is to DISCUSS the topic. If you disagree with someone, point out the facts as to why you disagree with another. If you both disagree, then leave it at that. Personal attacks are for the playground. Lets all be mature and debate the topic and leave it at that.

Now, I have it on good authority that all the players in the County commissioner drama are not what they seem. I have spoken with more than a half dozen people who have all told me the same story. I can not go into detail about it, but I will say I have been enlightened about the players in the drama. The things that happened were done in the best interest of all involved and the community.

That still does not change the fact that changes need to happen in the community. They are coming whether we want them to or not. So should we resist them until they run us over or should the board recognize there will be change and help the community adopt it. I feel the later is out best option. If we recognize there will be change and are proactive, the community can change gradually to meet it. Do I feel that our current elected officials are capable of this? I do know their past track record says no. While their hearts are in the right place, they need to look at the big picture. They vote like their thinking about 2 years from know instead of 20 years from now. We've elected them to make decisions that will effect our future. Their not accomplishing this goal. While I think they care about the community, we need more forward thinking people. It's time to change our government officials to reflect the future of Union County.

Well said, ucwriter. Lively debate on topics of mutual concern is always a good thing, as long as the attacks don't get personal. I happen to agree that Union County, like many others, needs to "ratchet up" their degree of sophistication when it comes to mission statements and looking to the future. While I am a strong proponent of additional commerce in Lake Butler/Union County (Spires is good, but we need oh so much more, for example), I have this recurring nightmare that if we don't shake loose some of the death grip that certain individuals have on industry in the area, we may well find ourselves a smaller version of Middleburg one day...just one endless string of small strip malls, one after another, down both 100 AND 121. I think a lot of the problem in recent years is two fold. We are, I think, a little too quick to want to join up with other counties in "cooperative" sorts of affiliations. A good example is the North Florida Chamber of Commerce fiasco. Our businesses seemed to take an active part in that organization. And, then, it seemed just about the time the market was saturated, and the dues were paid, the office was closed and the operation moved back to Starke. There's nothing wrong with partnerships, but we need to develop our own vision AND our own leadership, and not tag along with the efforts of people from other counties, most of whom have their county's interests ahead of ours in the final analysis.

Your comments were right on. My objections with current county officials have nothing to do with personalities. I think, as you do, that their intentions are good, and they are trying to do the best they can with a growing, small county and shrinking tax revenues. However, I do feel that we need, perhaps, to "look homeward" a little more and develop our own expertise whenever we can afford to do so.

Dreamcatcher, your right we need to look homeward and develop our own organizations locally. I bet if we really tried we could pull off our own county fair if we tried. The one in Bradford County is suppose to be for both counties, but I've never heard it called the Bradford/Union County Fair. The chamber fiasco is a great example of Bradford County taking are resources and running. Several years ago then city manager Richard Tillis pulled the city out of the chamber for lack of service. He also suggested Union County form it's own chamber. It's a shame nothing more ever came of it.
I understand the sheriff's office cooperating with Bradford in a drug task force, it makes sense. What doesn't make sense is why our elected officials are so short sighted when it comes to the future of this county. If your afraid to do the right thing because you won't get re-elected, your in office for the wrong reason. Hey dreamcathcer, any ideas on other areas the county could seperate itself from other counties?

Not from a governmental standpoint. I'm not a big fan of organizations like water management districts, and most regional organizations like NEFEC, but.......the existence of most of them can be justified for economic reasons alone. I DO wish we had someone who could buy out the Times and print that paper right here. It gets really discouraging seeing our front page be made up of Starke news. I'm sure the Starke news is important to Starke folks (although I'm not positive about even that), but there has historically been a LOT of community support here for local organizations (VFW, Schools, churches, FFA, Library, etc), and I think public ownership of the local paper would MAYBE help build up community pride even more. I'm not sure exactly how Miller would feel about selling off one of his papers to local folks, but I think in the long term it would be a good thing. One thing I DO wish we'd do is be more proactive about fighting the EPA about cleaning out those alleged small springs in Lake Butler that have supposedly filled up with silt, etc., and demand that they allow those springs to be cleaned. I always heard that Tillis wanted to clean them out, and EPA wouldn't let him. I don't know if that's the gospel truth, but if it is, our city/county officials need to be screaming home rule in Tallahassee AND Washington. Having our own fair might be dicey until we had a committee in place, since we might not attract the numbers needed to take up an entire week of activities, but I know why you suggested it. Like you, I get tired of Bradford county folks thinking (erroneously, I might add) that Bradford is the much superior county. With some marketing and some "thinking outside the box", Union could leave them in their dust....from their roads to their schools to their churches, even to their political stability, believe it or not.

Dreamcatcher,

A locally produced paper would be great. I agree it would bring more local pride. I researched the idea, and economically it's quite a pinch. According to market research, there are not enough businesses to support it. Besides, newspapers are becoming dinosaurs. The problem with that is most Union County residents, according to the same research, aren't online. So what do you do? I've wanted to at least start an online website or blog, but there are so many hours in a day. It would work if I could make it profitable, but no such way just yet. I'm still working on it though. As far as Miller selling the paper, why sell the only news in town and give up control of what is put in it. As you know, I have personal experience in this area. I remember several occasions when news he didn't want printed, that would hurt someone he knew, was pulled from my pages. They build the paper Tuesday night and print it Wednesday morning. If he saw something he didn't want, he would put more ads or some kind of history article in it's place. If you would like to confirm this, ask the current reporter at the Times.

I'll work on ways of thinking outside the box to boost this county.

any chance the High Springs Herald might want to jump the county line, give ole' John a run for his money. After all, if it isn't a profit-making enterprise, wouldn't he rather cut it back than to improve it or sell it to someone who cared about it? As far as a blog is concerned, the best kind of blogs are those that have "columnists" or "guest writers". Why not set up one that has local talent (donna harris, for example, children's author)......there's enough people with Union County connections (running commentary from C.J. Spiller during this, his possible Heisman year is an option)......make it a subscription blog. Just a thought.

another thought. C.J. has strict rules that he has to follow or get Clemson in a lot of trouble. Set up a "proprietary" sort of situation where he grants this blog an exclusive exposure, then if any other stations, broadcast media want to take part, they have to contact the blog.
