My condolences go out to the family; this is a horrible tragedy that no family should have to deal with. Rest in peace Rich, as a person who works in downtown Chicago, I thank you and the entire Chicago Police Department for the work done to protect everyone.

My heart fills with tears for he family of this fallen police officer. I hope in the near future it will come to light that officers need to be able to retire at a younger age and receive full pension rather than partial....

God Speed Officer Francis. You join many other Law Enforcement Officers killed in the Line of Duty this year alone. This city (Chicago) has raged war on there officers, and now we are paying the price. We have lost a good man, and a great cop. I have alot more to say, only I will not. You will be missed, Sir.

It really hurts my heart to hear about this officer's death and how it happend. For some reason, he appears very familiar to me (as I am active in my own community CAPS program. I don't think the mayor's comments regarding good and evil are appropriate for this indident. I don't think the murderer was good or evil; just mentally challenged. This should be a wake up call to all of society that we need to pay closer attention to this segment of our population. Given the dollar amount of Zoloft and Prozac being sold on a regular basis. Somebody is taking these meds for a reason and I don't think most of them are in any institutions. Who protected the woman who was murdered from Sommerset recently? This is the second incident that I am aware of recently that involved a mentally challenged person. The other woman was a murder victim who resided at Sommerset on Sheridan. Who is watching out for our most vulnerable citizens.

You know what, my 12 year old and I were watching the news coverage of the funeral last night (which gave me chills, like all fireman and police funderals do, there is no bigger honor, but anyway) he even said to me the officer looked familiar to him. I thought so but figured maybe not since I am friends with a lot of CPD.

It still shocks me that her family knew how she was but I did not hear them say anything about trying to get her some help instead she was left roaming the streets. They say that she was not violent however she pulled a knife on her daughter in the past few days. My heart aches for what his police officers family is going through. I never minded my husband being a cop before especially undercover, however I worry more now than I ever did. His risks his life as all officers do every day that they go to work and people dont realize that nor do some care. He loves what he does and would never do anything else. For that and for all the cops out there...god bless you and stay safe!
