A bill that would have allowed one of two Gary riverboat casino licenses to be transferred to northeastern Indiana fizzled in a Senate committee Thursday and is likely dead this session. Full Story

Next the deal will be asking for tax abatements, all benefits to the owners for a sick economy. They need to understand that people need to be more responsible and place their personally earned dollars towards THEIR BILLS, NOT INTO THE POCKET OF CASINO OWNERS. Stop spinning the reason you want to play games. Be content with the fact you have your casino business in the present capacity as it stands. Close it up and walk away if your greed for a better mousetrap is all that you're looking for. Us taxpayers are sick and fed up with these types of businesses getting free passes on how to increase the measure of profit in their business while we are personally getting no personal relief in a recession. Face it, you are in a dying business for the time being. Don't ask for more favors. You have too many already.

I check the revenue postings from the Indiana Gaming Commission every month and it shows between 6% and 9% return on the money spent by patrons. One casino takes in about 500 million dollars in and pays out as winnings about 44 million. It appears there is no laws requiring a mininum return to the players. I have read how the profits and the taxes are distributed but nothing on the mininum payouts required. I would hope that this bill stays dead until the win-loss ratio improves. Is it gambling when you know you can't win or are you just paying another TAX?????

Just look what the casinos have done for the urban blight in Gary...abandoned houses, cars on blocks and boarded up stores. Why wouldn't we want all of that in Northeastern Indiana? On the other hand, can you imagine what Gary would be like without the casino money!

I'm not sure of the validity of this but I was told the Blue Chip had been fined 6 million for not paying out the minimum required.(I heard this a few months back) I was also told that the fine was less than they would have paid to patrons. I would assume the Gaming Commission would be the ones to fine a casino if this is true.

"...The electronic gaming device [slot machine] must pay out at least eighty percent (80%) and not more than one hundred percent (100%) of the amount wagered unless otherwise approved by the executive director."

in December, 2007, all 11 Indiana casinos were over 90% pay back, with the statewide average at 91.52% pay back. Belterra was higest at 92.51%; Resorts East Chicago was lowest pay back at 90.57%.

Blue Chip has been over 92%(and therefore well within the regulatory minimums) since at least February 2007 except for June 2007 when it was just a shade less at 91.93%.

All of this information is publicly available.

We tax payers continue to flip the bill for all the dead beats that take advantage of Welfare system and the state/fedrally paid health care system! So why not allow a new casino in Indiana st least some body will get a job out of it get off the goverment payroll

The untold story is that Don Barden is holding the State, the Majestic Star employees, the City of Gary, and everyone else with any stake in this FOR HOSTAGE!!!

He says he could build a $150 brand new sweet casino if the State allows him to move his second license to NE Indiana. He could do it even if they don't (having two licenses absolutely does not prevent him from building one casino), but if he stalls and holds out, maybe the State lets him build another casino somewhere else. Get over it, Don, and just build the best casino you can in the place where the State lets you operate. If you build it they will come! People go to run-down places to gamble all the time, if the casino is good!

Not to say that Sen. Meeks or Rudy Clay are blameless here (mostly through greed and refusal to call Barden's bluff, and not doing his math homework, respectively), but Barden holds the most cards and refuses to play any of them unless everyone bows down to his wishes. Heinous.
