yes nellybobo, i'm from there but moved away a long time ago. however, a hometown is a hometown and i was feeling nostalgic. i suppose i was just wanting to attempt to 'catch up' on who's who and what's what and maybe relive some old times, not that i'm ancient. lol.

Did you know Glen Smith passed away. Kinda put things in a better perspective for me. Blues Festival in OCT is always a good time to catch up. My friends from high school keep up through the year some. Tell me what you wanna know and I can ask em. Gosh fellow Helenian. We are a rare group.

I don't think I knew Glen Smith, but I'm sorry to hear of his passing. What did he do there? I've always intended to go to the Festival, just never gotten around to it. Just another thing on my 'to get done' list. I didn't want to know anything in particular, just to catch up on the old place. This forum is unbelieveably quiet. It seems the ones posting are the ones that moved away.

His family owned a store where Kress on Cherry Street used to be. He started another branch in Marianna. Did you work at Cedar back when it was Eagle River or was that some other post I read although I think you and I and bored are the only ones on this thread of lifes rich tapestry. Do you live in Paragould?

oh yes, i did know him. or at least shopped there. yes i worked at cedar chemical, aka eagle river. yes, now i live in paragould. tapestry it must be. the 3 of us, nellybobo, bored, and guest. helena-west helena used to be such a thriving community. i passed thru the other day, i believe it still has potential. i got a haircut while i was there. yaay me.

So were you at Eagle River with Dennis, Joel, Billy and Andy. I remember spills and stinky yellow scent. Chemical burns to the eyes etc. Its a wonder ya'll don't have health issues now because of it. If everybody that still lives there believed it had potential it just might. If the economy continues this downward spiral and we have to go back to basics I would rather be in Helena than the mega-OZ of Memphis. Life was simpler there and way more easy.

Yep i remember them. the stinky yellow stuff was dinatro and basinite. soaked into your skin and turned you yellow, ahh the good ole days, lol. and we probably will die of something related to that place.

i was raised in helena,in the late fifties,and attended helena jr. high. left there years and years ago,but still remember a few names and was wondering what became of them. bobby heslup,john howe,jr., smokey campbell,frances williams,trudy mayfield.don hensley. just to mention a few. can anyone help me? thanks in advance....

According to my brother, smokey campbell is still around. As for john howe jr. I havent heard anything to the contrary on him. I don't know the others. Glad you found the thread though. I don't guess many who got away keep up with whats left.

Don Hensley is not too far away, he has moved back to Clarksdale, MS from Southaven and has a car dealership there...I am not sure of the name though.

Since us ole timers are going back in time (to when Helena & West Helena was a fun play to live) Do you remember the "Show Bar" and I think it was Country Club out on the old Hwy going into Helena? Have a few good time at those in my 20's
