For those of you who think that CAFOS like Tyson Cobb-Vantress is a good thing and that our county will benefit from them taking over our countryside please have enough intelligence to open the link and read the entire article. I get so tired of people saying "Oh, it won't affect me or my family." Isn't that what the Barefoot Farmer said and now he may be having to shut down his farm. If you don't think this industry is going to hurt you or your loved one's you are wrong. You have been listening to the propaganda fed to us by this billion dollar industry and our Mayors (County & City) and Commissioners like Jerry Ray who's daughter Tammy Russel is putting up industrial chicken houses! This industry has nothing at all to do with our family farmers, we need them and must support them, however, we do not need CAFOS (confined animal feeding operations)which is INDUSTRIAL FACTORY FARMING. A big difference from our family farmers. Please read the information before you start criticizing those that have oppoosed COBB/VANTRESS.

Would you consider a hog farm a CAFO? What about cattle farm? They are all confineds which makes them CAFOs so in reality your ARE attacking the local farmers. Thanks to the clinton/gore team tobacco is on the way out so farmers have to do something to make moner. Furthermore, a private farmer raising chickens is not industrial no matter what anybody says. I don't like it either, but take it up with the state because the county can't do anything about it. The state constitution forbids it. End of story.

No, I would not consider a family owned hog or cattle farm a CAFO and if you really took the time to really educate yourself neither would you! I am all for the farmer, always have been. It is the large industrial factories (CAFOS) that are putting our cattle & hog farmers as well as grain, soybean, chicken farmers out of business. This is a quote from Farm Aid,

"Most poultry companies, for example, urge new farmers to build at least four poultry houses, based on the company's own specifications, in their contract agreements. At about $300,000 per house, this requires farmers to borrow hundreds of thousands of dollars just to get started. The poultry company, on the other hand, gets off the hook without any risks associated with this investment. Very commonly, companies will later require farmers to make additional, costly changes to their poultry houses at the farmer's expense. It's clear to see who's getting the short end of the stick in this relationship."

Thousands of family farmers have been duped by these large corporations believing that they will make a decent living, provide a great service, etc., while in the long run all they end up doing is becoming a bad neighbor, polluting the land land, water & air, spending more of their money to purchase all new equipement whenever the "Big Company" tells them to and eventually drive them into bankruptcy or worse. These farms like the one's Lundy Russell or Ryan Russell & Tammy Russell plan to build has their names but they can't make a move without getting the OK from Tyson-Cobb/Vantress, so their so called farms are not their own business at all. I have spoken with Randy Yates and he himself said he will be the one to over-see all of the "chicken houses," and who is Randy Yates, he works for Cobb-Vantress. So please tell me again that these chicken houses will not be industrial.

I am including the link to FARM AID, the organization for family farmers in America, the organization that has tried for decades now to preserve the family farm. Please don't tell me or anyone else who opposes Industrial Factory Farming that we oppose "Family Farms,' that makes you look ignorant and from the way you right I know you are not that! I have read a lot of your posts and some things I do agree on & find you very intelligent but on this subject I really don't believe you have all of the facts. Hopefully this link will help you to see what is really happening.

Let me leave you with this quote from Farm Aid "While USDA statistics suggest most of these operations are family farms, it is likely that the family farmers caught in the industrial food system do not enjoy full ownership or control over their farm operations and managerial decisions—something many experts cite as critical elements in defining a family farm. Among the largest threats to their power are contract arrangements with large agribusinesses that dictate their decisions, farm management practices and debt requirements."

Just think. Just think! Where did Cobb Vantress locate their hatchery? Was it not in the Lafayette INDUSTRIAL PARK?
Is Cobb a family owned, family run operation? How many beef and pig operations are there now in Macon county where the animals spend their whole life on concrete? None!

Let's play smarter than a 5th grader! Is there a difference between CAFO's and what we have in Macon already? Is Cobb Vantress going to change Macon County? Has Cobb Vantress been run out of other places and is now here? Do we have an honest county mayor?

If cattle are enclosed in a fenced in area they are confined. If hogs are enclosed in a fenced in area they are confined. CAFO stands for CONFINED Animal Feeding Operation. If you want to win this fight you are going to have to stop using the term CAFO and find another venue. I wonder if anybody in opposition has even contacted the State and US Department of Agriculture or are they just happy spinning their wheels with the county court. Maybe some of them just like being seen handing out fliers and thumping their chests. If you want to get something done do it the right way and in a way that you might can actually get progress on it. I have already seen you are not going to get anything done on the chicken problem with the county commission like it or not.

The operations that are built and and are built in MACON county are not CAFOs. They are AFOs(Animal Feeding Operations) Macon county only has 1 CAFO. The only operation that are regulated by the EPA are CAFOs. All other AFOs are or can be regulated by the STATE. Thier is a very specific set of requirements that must be meet inorder for an operation to be a CAFO.
