Yes, I'm a smoker. Yes, I can eat a meal and not have a cigarette and often do. My choice!! I don't think this is as much an issue of health as it is of infringing on the freedom of business owners to offer a (currently) legal service to their customers. I know that smoking is not healthy for anyone. I also know that that economics tells us all about supply and demand (look at the gas prices lately) and it seems to me if there are so many non-smokers out there that are against smoking establishments, all of the businesses that allow smoking would go out of business for a lack of paying customers and all we would see are non-smoking establishments because that would be what society demanded. I don't see any businesses failing because they offer smoking. Allow owners their freedom. I don't patronize Hooters b/c I don't believe in the objectifying of women. I suppose I'm the minority b/c they are still in business. That's OK!! I wouldn't patronize a strip club that served wonderful cheeseburgers and then complain about the nudity I was exposed to. If I don't like what I'm exposed to, I won't patronize the business. And, yes, I do think that strip clubs are unhealthy. They objectify women, who have CHOSEN to work there on their own FREE WILL. Perhaps that alone would not kill anyone but, hey, while we're getting ridiculous, let's go ahead and research all of the sex addicts and sex offenders in the world and see how/if it's affected them! What better use of our courageous law-making leaders than that??? Let's also make all of Lafayette's restaurants serve only healthy foods while we're at it. We all know how ignorant and incapable we are of making our own choices, good or bad, and we know the rising rate of obesity. Let's just make tobacco illegal and be done with it...Oh, wait, maybe someone's making a profit from this.... hmmmm, when's the next tax hike due????

I do not go anywhere where my tax money is welcome but my smoke is not. If someone politely asks me to put out my cigarette I do. What next telling me I can't smoke in my yard? This is crazy, I thought this was a free country. Guess I need to move somewhere else so that I can be free.

I agree with the above. Where does it start and stop! i own a business and have chosen not to smoke in my office or waiting room. I, also, respect those who don't smoke, but would also enjoy such where it doesn't bother anyone else. I don't enjoy politicians nor the lawyers who have created such idiotic laws. Maybe we, the people, should create a law that states if these individuals get caught lying or cheated, they should serve a maximum jail time for such. What an unbalanced society!

If you count the county ordinances we have 35 smokefree workplace ordinances. Let's hope Lafayette will make it 36.

I have seen many times at resturants in Lafayette, where smokers had to wait extra time in line because non-smokers wanted our tables because they didn't want to wait for a table in their section! What's that all about!
If they don't like the smoke they should stay out of the smoking sections.Hipacrites! What are you going to do when they take away your right to eat fat food!We are all slowly losing our rights to choose for ourselves what we want. Good luck to all in this commy nation.

I think that the way are econimy is today, business owners should be glad they get any business , not decide who they will serve and who has to take a back seat. I feel its descrimination. People should stand up for our rights, because we are smokers we are people too, and our money spends the same.

i think it should be up to the business owners if they want to have smokeing or not tohave smokeing in there business what ever happend of our rights or our freedom in this great U.S.A it is our choice to smoke and if we want to we should be able to where ever we want just like the non smokers can go where ever they want to, it would be like me i am a smoker and if a business is non smokeing it is my right to go in or not to go in and the non smokers have that same choice so why should i suffer just because you as Gov. people want it your way.

Let the establishments decide.... we don't need the government to decide for us. As you can see; these establishments haven't jumped on the bandwagon...only a few. If you have read the above you'll see once again what "people think"...so let them decide where they want to go. I will say this and you all need to think about it. If you like to have a beer or a drink at a bar and need to go outside to smoke....what do you think will happen next? The police will probably pull up and give you a PI; because of the nice .08 "your boozed law". Don't like drinking and driving...or drunk people roaming the streets....but, we all know .08 is questionable in many ways.Hope you don't like to talk on your cell phone, eating, or listening to your music in your car...cause those are next!!! I guess I could understand when kids are involved when eating out...but, kid's aren't in bars and we are adults who make decisions.... if you don't like smoke you can somewhere that its not allowed. If we're going to ban smoking let's shut down all the factories in town, all the vehicles, that blow smoke out their tailpipe, and ban fireplaces too; which by the way are far worse than cig smoking could ever be. I'm tired of this; our government needs to worry about more important things than this.... how about fixing our roads for once, stop gas price gauging, put police out there to stop...the growing list of crimes we read about everyday, and this could go on and on. We pay all these taxes and this is what we're most concerned about! Is our government becoming socialist? HMMMM. Bottom line, let the people decide!!!

I know that second hand smoke is potentially dangerous but so is working a million hours sometimes to provide for your child in a convenience store that is known to get robbed alot. So, is walking across the street at nite to get to your job and almost getting hit by a car because of a bridge with idiots. So is everyday life is dangerous. There is a huge amount of criminals on the loose some child molesters, rapists, murderers , etc and we are worried about someone lighting up in a bar and us dying from that. I am only worried about everyday is seeing the next day to be able to hug my 6 year old and insure her that i am trying to make the world a better place for her. That is my concern. I know that second hand smoke is dangerous but i just truly believe that there is more dangers out there than the issue of second hand smoke. For one pollution has killed alot of people whether from breathing it in or eating some toxic meat/fish. As I said I don't believe this is something we should at this time turn our attention to. At this time, we should turn our attention to the things that matter. Yes, I dont want someone blowing smoke in my child's face but i am more concerned right now about someone taking her and doing horrible things to her and her winding up dead because of some sicko out there who gets their jollys over hurting innocents. Light up a smoke lafayette just keep your guns down your pants.

People will still go out to eat. If everyone goes smoke free then smokers will not have a choice to go somewhere that is smoking. I don't think it will hurt restaurants. In fact, there are restaurants that I won't go to because of the smoking. A little section of smoking in a restaurant goes through the whole place.

I am very happy to hear that most people would like a ban on smoking. I have always felt it should be considered an attack on people who don't smoke. They are actually assulting us with deadly cancer causing chemicals when they are smoking around us. I am actually waiting for it to become child abuse to smoke around young ones who suffer asthma. I have long felt it is a selfish thing to do and maybe these parents would wake up to what they are doing to their young ones. Yea, I see some write about the bad food we eat and other "dangerous" things. We can choose to eat healthy or not, we can choose to wear our seat belt or not. If you smoke around me.....you are not giving me a choice as to wheather or not I wish to inhale cancer causing chemicals. If you want to kill yourself you should be made to do it away from non-smokers. Simple as that.

Smoking is a dirty dangerous habit and needs to be stopped, I don't care if smokers think they have the right to smoke, the rest of us have a fight to smoke free air.

I seen something yesterday that really disturbed me. I went into athe village pantry on 4th street yesterday to get something to drink. There was an elderly man ahead of me and he asked for a carton of cigarettes. The cashier told him he needed ID or she wouldnt sell them to him. The man was about 70 years old and didnt have his ID on him so she refused to sell this poor old man cigarettes. I caught this man in the parking lot and offered to use my ID to get them for him. The cashier refused to sell them to me because she said "these are the exact cigarettes that man wanted and I will not allow that in my store. That man refused to show me ID and I WILL NOT sell him cigarettes." WTF!!! The man was having trouble walking and there was no mistaking that he was old enough to buy cigarettes but she was rude to him about buying them. GROW UP LADY!!! You can sell lighters to minors or fireworks to minors but damn if you sell cigarettes to this OLD man. In my opinion, this was completely uncalled for and unjustified. See what happens when you try to take away peoples rights.

Sounds to me like the Lady was obviously a tree hugging, palm sweating liberal. Just my opinion. And I know someone will probably post that she should be awarded for doing her job or something to like that and that's fine like I said just my opinion. Maybe we can get more of you libs to go stand on the corner with signs protesting that little old men shouldn't have any rights at all.

I am sure the cashier does it because she didn't want to lose her job like my brother did. He sold to a 20+ year old and was fired because he didn't ask for an id! Parents know if their children smoke...people who smoke stink. Let them parent not the govt.

I am a nonsmoker. However, I feel that the government is infringing more and more on all of us. I do not believe that they should be able to tell a business owner that their business must be smoke free. I really like the idea at IHOP, make a room with a door, to keep all the smoke in, away from those of us who don't want to be near it or have health issues. I just feel that it is wrong, smoking is still legal yet little by little the government is doing all it can to get rid of it. I understand that it is unhealthy, but again like so many other people have said, I thought this was supposed to be a free country which means I have the choice not to go or be around things I don't like without forcing other people to give up what they do like....

"He sold to a 20+ year old and was fired because he didn't ask for an id!" Absolutely ridiculous. If he wanted to keep that job or not have a firing on his background he should have done something about it and that's his fault. And it's people like that that need to start "getting it." Too many people walk around everywhere everyday with blinders on and think the government will take care of our problems. WHEN(???) will you understand that government IS the problem.
