I am SO glad we moved away from Clermont. When we first moved there it was so beautiful with it's rolling hills and beautiful lakes. It was a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of Orlando but not too far from it to do some shopping or enjoy a show.

Clermont has turned into a mess and is becoming very ugly. Hwy 50 is a disaster and takes forever to drive through it anymore. It was sickening to see all of the hills being leveled throughout the years. And City Council is proud of this???

The flat lands in Clermont...build on. The hills...what have you wrought? It looks like a open mineral mine in reverse with homes sticking out of it.

Ok, very few of us like that our hills were cut down, but at least something is going in now besides houses. Clermont is not ugly and we're finally getting some decent restaurants and shopping facilities so Lake Co. can get some of the tax money we've been spending in Orange. Hwy 50 is due to have more lanes added and yes, the traffic is horrible. But traffic is horrible everywhere.

What I don't understand, HAWK, is that so much negativity is said about Clermont when you're in Fort Myers!(Or at least that's your ISP.) Ft. Myers is the foreclosure capitol of Florida and has been going downhill for at least several years while Floridians were in exodus from Ft. Myers to states north of the border.

Have you not seen Fort Myers Beach and how beautiful the white powder sand is and crystal clear the gulf waters are???

I think you are referring to Cape Coral, which is very ugly too.

I lived in Clermont for over 10 years so I have seen it go from beautiful country land to ugly cookie-cutter homes. So, yes I have seen the hills disappear year after year.

Besides that, there is no real industry in Clermont so everyone has to drive to Orlando for work, which is why Hwy 50 has become so congested.

Clermont is and will always be a bedroom community even if the stores (which people are not spending any money now anyway) open up.

Like I said, I used to like Clermont, but now it's nothing special. Growth is not always a good thing.

Actually I haven't been to Ft. Myers beach -- but Sanibel and Captiva. Beaches are fine, just don't want to live on one. And I rather like the Oregon coast.

Oh, well...you don't like Clermont. It's still nicer than any other town within 50 miles. And it's fine to be a bedroom community. I don't take that as an insult. And if you think people aren't spending money, you haven't been out lately. Yes, we're all watching our money a bit closer, but deals are out there.

Councilman Ray Goodgame is, but he has bigger goals then Clermont.......watch and see. The city manager now he is a different story. Man's been there 30 yrs to long. Wonder how much under the table money has been made off all this growth. Employee morale is at a all time low, if you don't believe that ask the city to see there recent survey on the subject. These guys used taxpayer money to buy 200+ acres of land from the former mayor of Clermont, but poormouth they got no money......Like Obama WE NEED CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!

BJ's isn't the only store coming into that shopping center. JC Penny, Michaels, Bed Bath & Beyond....and they're just behind Red Lobster and Olive Garden which are already open.

Sam's club "may" be considering a store near the Walmart on 27.

So...at least we'll have some shopping places here instead of driving 15 miles or more.

I will agree with you on Lani Kai...it is a old, spring-break party hotel and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone on vacation.

However, Fort Myers Beach is paradise and when you get to see beautiful sunsets every night over the gulf waters and witness dolphins playing daily...well, there is nothing you can say to put a damper on that...nothing!

By the way, I have nothing against latinos but to be honest, there are not an abundance of latinos here either. Sorry you got your data confused with Kissimmee.

I've never been to Oregon but I'm sure it's beautiful country...not sure what that has to do with my opinion of Clermont, but that's okay.

I am aware of employee morale being at an all-time low and I also know all about Pool and his land being sold to Clermont for a recreation center on Lake Minneola, which the beach has been closed for years thanks to Wayne for dropping the ball on renewing the permits. Remember, I was there for over 10 years so I know what I am talking about.

Meanwhile, Dismayed...do you attend City Council meetings? Do you actually know what is really going on with Clermont? Do you even know where city hall is or do you not drive west past Target??? If you really knew the good-old-boy network that is running your precious city, then you really would be Dismayed.

Well, no, I don't attend city council meetings. I don't live in the city limits. I drove for years back and forth to Orlando to work and frequently drive to other places beyond Target. I'm not so much defending the city of Clermont and some of the decisions the leaders made as defending the place I call home. Since we chose to remain in Florida I don't know of many areas I'd rather live.

I understand your love of the beach and I agree it's quite beautiful (or at least a lot of the West coast of Florida I've seen.) When I mentioned Oregon's coast, I was merely mentally comparing the two, having spent 2 months in Oregon this summer. Sorry if it bothered you that I got off topic.

Good-bye to the hills and hello to concrete with color.

I too used to live in Clermont and loved it until the building boom happened. What a shame that this town/city has become this.

I remember when there was only 1 traffic light between the Florida Tpke and US 27. Also, shame on Lake County for not planning correctly. Hwy 50 should've been expanded to handle not only the new housing, but the stores that were built. The local Government should've kept Hwy 50 with no traffic light and created service roads, which would've let traffic run smoothly thru Clermont.

Still the #1 concern should be the school system. That was the factor for my leaving.....

Wow!!! I live in Clermont on US Hwy 27 and I think it's beautiful. You can still see the rolling hills when driving and on some occassions in the summer you can smell the orange groves. I'm glad they are building within our community this way it will feel more of a community with people walking around and saying hello. Also the beaches may be an awesome sight but I for one don't want to spend all of my time looking at the beaches I'd rather mingle with people. These retails will eventually allow people to walk rather than using there cars all of the time and walking is a good thing since much is not done in florida it is also very healthy. Now all we need is a beautiful Park so they children can have some place to play and exercise rather than playing video games and get to know one another. I feel bad alot of times for the children as they don't have much to do and can't go anywhere unless they are driven which can be a hassle for the parents. Oh and a good transit system will be right on point. I love to ride on the bus/train with a cup of coffee while reading the paper. I'm from NY and did it all the time I can't remember the last time I got a chance to just sit and read while on my way to work. Clermont is the place to be.........

First of all, you can't smell the orange blossoms in the summer because they bloom in MARCH...my goodness, give me a break.

Second of all, what rolling hills??? Hwy 27 was leveled awhile ago. Hwy 27 going towards Davenport used to be beautiful and we could get to Disney in about 20 minutes. Now it would take at least 50 minutes to get there with all the traffic, lights and construction. But hey, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Do you not think people mingle at the beach??? It's awesome how happy people are especially at sunset time when they are walking their dogs or just being social. You are just clueless, aren't you.

Fort Myers has a transit system and trolley system in place. Did you know that?

Clermont is the place to be.......if you like being stuck in a very boring city. But hey, Orlando is just a hop, skip and jump away where you can enjoy a great Magic game and take in a show at the Bob Car Theater.(I actually miss doing both of those).

Enjoy your cup of java..make it last since you will need to think of something else to do after that.

OK, Hawk, we got it....you don't like Clermont. Glad you like your new place.

We, on the other hand, look forward to some of the amenities coming to Clermont so we don't have to drive so far to shop or see a movie. But, then, most of us don't always have to be "doing" something. We have friends and actually like our families, and many of us have our churches or other groups with whom we associate. And we walk our dogs and talk to our neighbors.

I moved out here 16 years ago from Orlando. Wouldn't move back. If you think 50 is bad here, try going through Orlando! Besides that, they're in the process of constructing addtional lanes on SR 50 as we speak.

Well, of course you like your family...what a wierd statement. I should certainly hope so.

I get it now. You're retired and need a slower pace. Got it. I'm not there yet so I think much differently than you. To each his own.

The widening of Hwy 50 will not be enough of a help...that's not my statement, it's the statement of city council because by the time they finish the project, it will not have caught up with the number of drivers who will continually use that road.

But it won't affect me!

Nice chatting with you Dismayed. Enjoy the holidays.

Damn. I wish yu would have been a county comissioner and had this opinion of Clermont in the 70's. Us old crackers would have been happy to move your arse down south. I did my best but fell into a minority. Rezoning became a "right" of passage.

Thanks for the update Dismayed...what did you have for lunch? Let me guess, something from Red Lobster since that is new too? Don't worry, the newness will wear off soon and then it's back to same 'ole BORING Clermont. Oh, and have fun with Niagra stealing all of your drinking water...such a great place to live! HA
