Labor Day's origins rooted in sweatshops

There are 20 comments on the www.citizen.com story from Sep 5, 2010, titled Labor Day's origins rooted in sweatshops. In it, www.citizen.com reports that:

It was a demonstration unlike anything the country had ever seen. On Monday, Sept. 5, 1882, some 10,000 people played hooky from their jobs and descended on New York City in a display of solidarity for the American worker. Organizers declared it "Labor Day."

Experts say it was the culmination of decades of worker disenfranchisement brought on by industrialization. Strikes such as a walkout by women at the Dover Cotton Factory in 1828 were common.

The sweat shops and child labor up north were worse than slavery down south. Slavery ended in 1865 but sweat shops and child labor persisted until the 1940s. American followers of Karl Marx advocated the slavery of poor whites to control them the way black slaves were controlled. After slavery ended the socialists demanded government control of all labor. There's an element of the Democratic Party that demands control of ALL THE POPULATION today.

Your lame defense of your great-grandfather's slavery is just that, lame.

Sweatshops were no picnic, but the selling off of family members, rape, muders, whippings, amputations, and beatings of slaves make the horrors of sweatshops pale.

Organized labor ended child labor, and gavev us the 40 hour week, and the WEEK-END. Marx had nothing to do with "...slavery of poor whites to control them ..." whatever that means.

Marx was an idealist who never calculated the full evil of human nature of some people into his economics based political system.
Marx was wrong; as Marx's disciples, the lying neo-conservatives who dominate the present-day GOP are just as wrong; for the same reason.

Your daffy assert that "...Democratic Party that demands control of ALL THE POPULATION today..." is a diversion from the actual position of large portions of the GOP, especially the "religious right."
It is the GOP, with its anti-freedom positions on homosexualist marriage, abortion, and the exporting of American jobs and other issues of the working class that demands control f Americans.

HAPPY LABOR DAY TO ALL WORKING AMERICANS; and to all those LOOKING FOR WORK. Have hope, the recovery is slow, but steady. A GOP victory will throw us back into depression.

A FEW FACTS ABOUT UNIONS ON THIS LABOR DAY

Here in Connecticut, government employees outnumber non-government employees, and their unions LITERALLY run the state.

Obama and the Democrats have been rapidly increasing the number of (mostly unionized) Federal employees.

The vast majority of Obama's so-called "stimulus package" (POLITICAL SLUSH FUND) went into the pockets of union employees.

HAPPY "LABOR" DAY EVERYONE!

I can't imagine that state workers outnumber all others. Please check your figures.

In any case, Connecticut would do well to get back more of the money it sends into the Federal Government as income tax. Connecticut workers support three of four southern and western states.

I don't need to check my figures. You just need to learn to read. I didn't say "state workers outnumber all others."

I said
"Here in Connecticut, government employees outnumber non-government employees, and their unions LITERALLY run the state."

And your response is typically ignorant. The solution isn't for Connecticut to try to get back more money from the federal government. The solution is to reduce the size of our government and remove union control of our state.

You're the idiot of the week. You have no knowledge of any poster's great grandfather. Most Americans' great grandfathers were still in Europe or other countries And their families migrated here during the 20th century and had nothing to do with slavery. More US blacks have slave owner ancestors than US whites. Even Michelle Obama's great grandfather was said to be a slave owner. You also spread the lies and exaggerations spread by abolitionist northern newspapers who have been proved to print falsehoods deliberately to stir up anti southern resentment. Whippings were standard punishment for felonies during that time period and it was immaterial if the criminals who were whipped were black or white. The northern press routinely reported black whippings without revealing that it was for felony convictions and neglected to report on whippings of whites. All of your accusations are misrepresentations. Most slaves worked 9 hour days with Sundays off to attend church. Most slaves were never whipped in their entire lives. Most plantation slaves had little work to do during the winter season when crops wouldn't grow. Household servants typically lived in the same house as the master and ate well, were dressed well, and were loved by the host family. Northern sweatshops were far worse. Small children were turned over to the factories where they worked 18 hour shifts, slept on the factory floors, and would fall asleep from exhaustion and tumble into the moving machines and were killed. Child labor and sweatshops persisted while unions looked the other way because these people were not union members. Henry Ford initiated the 5 day work week... not unions. The unions were copycatting Henry Ford. American followers of Marx did indeed propose the enslavement of poor whites it just didn't catch on.
The Democratic Party is the party of slavery, the party of Jim Crow, the party of segregation, the party of welfare dependence, and now they're the party of socialism. The Democratic Party has always been about control of more and more segments of the population. That's why they make so many laws and government regulations and create more and more taxes on the middle class. It's all about control.
Homosexuals have always been at the center of the American socialist movement. They have also always advocated mass abortion and gun control and ending Christian beliefs and curtailing American freedoms. Always! You're just another 'useful idiot' working for the left wing. As far as the current recession... it started AFTER the Democrats took control of the US Congress in the 2006 elections. You absolutely win the liar of the week. You win EVERY week!

I fail to see the distincton between "all others", and "non-government" workers. Tell me what you are trying to say.

Do you know that your Federal income tax is spent upon other states; and that Connecticut gets back less, per person, from the Federal government than any other state?

Did I hit a nerve?
Good.

Southern Baptists are unchristian. Are you one? You seem like it.

Your "history" is as twisted as your morals.

I am concerned about you. Please forget all this hate you are full of. The homosexualists don't care about you. They don't want you. Forget them.

The unions saved children from unregulated capitalism, not the other way around.

Find a bible. Read only the words of Jesus. Forget all the rest.
YOU MAY FIND PEACE. It is closer than you think.

Yes, dumbass, I am aware of that. What's your point?

I am also aware that the union controlled Democrats run the state.

In fact, this year alone, Democrat mismanagement has cost Connecticut many, many millions in what should have been easily obtained Federal education, transportation and highway funds.

Ah, I see through your "sophestry." You are counting state and federal workers. Still, it is hard to imagine.
Is this just your opinion, or do you have some sort of official count? If you are actually correct, than you are right to be outraged.

However, your belief that "unions control" everything is far from true. If the people off Connecticut chose the better legislaor in the election, who granted you the power to know more than everyone else combined? How do youarrive at the silly assumption of "...union controlled Democrats..." ?

It must be cool to be as smart as God.

I don't have to be as smart as God, just smarter than you, which is a VERY low threshold.

The word you both misused and misspelled in a failed attempt to appear intelligent is "sophistry." The problem, of course, is that there hasn't been any deception on my part but a total and complete lack of reading comprehension on your part.

And speaking of believing you have God-like powers here’s a word that describes your arrogant and ridiculous belief that you know more about my state government and politics than I do. The word is HUBRIS, and it “often indicates being out of touch with reality and overestimating one's own competence or capabilities.”

Yes, I am correct that there are more government employees in Connecticut than non government employees. The majority of them are union members and they have elected legislators who do their bidding.
