Windy, But What's Up With the Windmills?

There are 1 comment on the WBEN-AM Buffalo story from Oct 10, 2009, titled Windy, But What's Up With the Windmills?. In it, WBEN-AM Buffalo reports that:

The winds topped 60 miles an hour along the Lake Erie shoreline yesterday, but why weren't the windmills working along Route 5 in Lackawanna? While it might be conterintuitive, once the windspeeds top between 50-55 miles per hour, the turbines actually shut down, to protect the highlt sensitive equipment.
