Wild Mustangs shot and hit by cars near NM state line

I have been working with Judy Barnes of Costilla to help save the beautiful wild horses that I see near the New Mexico/Colorado state line when I drive to and from Denver to Taos. Just over the state line into Colorado is 17 miles of open range with no fences. I often see cars, trucks and RVs speeding along at 70 or 80 mph, apparently unaware of the wild horses even when they are grazing on the edge of the road. I often see blood smears, horse carcasses and tire tracks where some unfortunate motorist slammed on the brakes. Judy Barnes lives on Wild Horse Mesa and monitors the horses on an almost daily basis. She has created The Spirit of the Wild Horse Foundation to help protect and preserve them. They are in great danger, both from being shot and being hit by cars as they cross Highway 159 to get to a BLM recreational lake on the other side of the road. It’s a complicated and very sad situation. What we don’t want is to have these horses rounded up and slaughtered. What about fences? More visible warning signs? Motion-detection lights at night? A culvert crossing? Stock tanks? More law enforcement for speed limits? All we really need are people who care, can study the situation and agree on solid solutions. Anyone who loves horses and is willing to help in any way may contact me: [email protected] You may also contact Judy Barnes: [email protected] m.
