RE: Rail safety lacking
Mary what happened to "Personal Responsibility"? The people that continue to walk on the tracks know that at some point, a train is going to be coming. They don't put those tracks down and not use them. This is the same mentality that adds warning labels to blow-dryers telling you not to use them in the shower. If you can't figure out that your life is being endangered by doing something stupid, do we really need you? The "Darwin Awards" are dedictated to people like this. http://www.darwinawards.com/ |

Ms. Forgey - Every problem you mentioned is caused by only one factor...Humans! People who walk on tracks despite knowing it is dangerous. People who drive around barriers despite knowing it is dangerous. People (train operators) who text/phone instead of running the trains despite knowing it is dangerous. People who commit suicide by jumping in front of trains (they depend on this being dangerous). Neither Metrolink or any other organization can take every possible precaution against human stupidity and human irresponsibility. As for the rail locations, Metrolink often has to use existing rail lines, since Metrolink is a fairly recent creation. The rail line passing through Covina was, for a very long time, a rarely-used freight line. I know, I grew up 100 yards from that rail line. As for Metrolink's additional lines, their job is to transport people within urban areas! Therefore, the lines must be in urban areas not "out in the boonies". Personal Responsibility and Thinking is the key to railroad safety.
