There are some really good ones that seem to really care.

With our our SAT scores in the toilet proves our school administration is doing a piss pour job and raising our taxes is further example that our school board is nothing more than a rubber stamp. Our district has hit a new low.

I don't disagree that there is some stuff going on in this district that the board needs to wake up and address. They have become a complacent rubber stamping group of yes people. But don't throw hard working teachers and schools under the bus. Get your facts straights..

SAT scores for last two years at LPHS are..and this is straight from the data on the TEA website:

Class of 2011: All students 968, African American, 818 Hispanic 960 , And whites 987
Class of 2010: All students 982, African American 852, Hispanic 970, And whites 1006

The scores for 2012 will be out this fall and 2013 next fall. I am sure they will be similar. Do they need to be improved...sure. But again, lets not be negative about the schools. All that does is put a spotlight on the schools and NOT where the spotlight needs to be. Do some digging...ask some questions...you will be surprised what you might learn. Go to school board meetings and let you voice be heard, no one goes to these meetings except the administrators who are required and those that get recognized by the board for something good they did. Then they leave after recognitions. So, really...no one goes. You want to make a real difference...let your voice...not your typed fingers be heard!

Signed..a hard working teacher that would love it if you did try to make some changes.

It is interesting to me that your board is considered to be rubberstamping when they not only approved but suggested the 5% increase and the 3000 per teacher which is higher than 5% for actual teachers. It is so much easier to complain. I would suggest the people on this forum who constantly complain about the city and or their schools would be happier somewhere else. There are plenty of teachers looking for jobs and plenty of people looking to live in a place like La Porte. Consider being part of the solution.

The school board has many items on the agenda that require no discussion. This makes the board appear to be rubber stamping, when actually these items are routine items that require board approval. One of the best ways a board member can inform the attending public is to ask a question of the administration to explain the item.

I have been to few board meetings and understand how it and the consent agenda works. Also, we voted iin school board members, not administrators. It is a board member's responsibility do not only ask the administration to explain but also do their own research on items. If they can't do that they should not be a board member.

I should have added the "do your own research" and also it is good for a board member to lobby the administration in private. Express your views to them. The administration needs to know what the board member is thinking and to debate these issues with the member. It is always better if a good idea by a board member becomes the idea of the administration in the public meeting.

When you are elected to the board you’re told not to listen to or take action on any complaint. You’re told to refer all questions to the superintendent and he will inform you of the problem. The problem is the board operates in a fish bowl with very little public input. I.E. huge consent agenda.

So it is true, the school board does work and report to the superintendent.

All of these suggestions and opinions...and very few step up to VOLUNTEER their time to make a difference. It is so easy to complain and point fingers from behind your computer!

It's an elected position...just because there's no pay involved does mean it is should be categorized in the "I volunteer my time" column. It is a responsibility position. I wish we could complain out from behind the computer...but we can't....
