I am very proud of how nice Five Points is looking. I know my wife and I look forward to enjoying the area especially as spring approaches and the weather turns nice. It's about time we here in La Porte had a pleasant place to meet with friends and enjoy our community.
During this economic downturn I would rather have the $4million dollars in the city coffers and the 15 state paying jobs this gaudy, high maintenance park cost us.

IF YOU ARE CAUCASION DON'T WANDER OFF TO THE NORTH SIDE WHILE YOU VISIT THIS WONDERFUL LITTLE PARK. YOU WOULD FIND YOURSELF IN A CONFRONTATION WITH THE WONDERFUL LPPD. YES THE PARK IS AT THE MIDDLE OF THE "WHITE/BLACK" LA PORTE LINE-DO YOU THINK ANYONE FROM THE NORTH SIDE WILL BE ABLE TO USE IT WITHOUT BEING HARASSED BY THE "FINEST" LA PORTE HAS TO OFFER?

I sure hope everyone can use this park who wishes, it cost us all quite a large sum of taxpayer funds. It needs to be used to the fullest.

My main problem with this park is the exorbidant expense and the connection with a con artist/developer---Also, the high maintenance cost we will continue to shoulder for the future.

After reading discussion on this park here, I finally drove down there for a "look see" of this park. Wow, is all I could say. Yes, it gives a nice uplift to the area but it sure reminded me of the woman with a size 10 foot trying to cram her foot in a size 5 shoe. Those million dollar palm trees are way over kill. Oh well, they will be the 1st thing to go on the next hurricane (& don't believe they occur only every 10 yrs).
Those palm trees will be standing forever-they have extremely long tap roots.

Rush right on down there as this is the new place to pick up crack hoes and drugs for you and your families. The old Green Arbor apartments are not safe to buy dope anymore. How about a 150 million dollar hangout for perverts?(oops we have one LPISD)

I have heard that the city is going to build a parking garage behind the park to accommodate all the people lining up to stand around in the sun. What I believe they are putting the garage in for, is to have a place to park, once they destroy main street like Baytown did. The city is planning on slowly killing itself, and don't forget about the resturant that the city is working on at Main and 146.
What restaurant?

The city owns the building at the corner of Main and 146 on the NE corner where they are going to put their entrance pillars for .5- 1 million dollars(edited for the normal over runs), what they call the gateway. They have been trying to rent this building out for over a year to someone who will put a restaurant there, but they aren't getting any takers. They are even paying someone a fee to find them a renter without any luck so far.

The taxpayers have owned that building for more than 3 years. It was held without use in hopes that Commissioner Garcia would bring her office here (went to Pasadena instead), or developed as part of her "Stars" initiative, which didn't happen either. When the 5 Points deal started forming, it was decided the building should become a restaurant. I believe the City Manager wants a seafood restaurant there.

I walk through the North side all the time... the cops never harrass me... in fact the cops... once seeing that it's just me... usually don't bother me at all.

One cop stopped me walking the other night at 4am on my way to Krogers... but once I told him who I was he left me be... I guess he was new.

Valid observation, one I have been making for a long time. Your fresh voice to this issue, along with others hopefully, could be helpful. Please share your concerns with our Councilman and our City Manager. You can reach them at: MoserT@laportetx.gov and BottomsR@Laportetx.gov

I don't understand "maybe a fresh voice could be helpful". If this whole Main street and 5 points Plaza is so well thought out, wouldn't this already be one of the top things on their agenda? Instead of Pillars at the entrance of our Main street I would rather the money be spent on Pedestrian safety, especially since they want us shopping on Main and relaxing on the Plaza. I noticed the Plaza is also on the metro line. That should be interesting.

Had a look at 5 Points and Sylvan Beach this morning.
What a monumental waste of money. I admit it looks nice, but the plaza at 5 points is too small to really do anything with. And as for the sand at Sylvan beach, I see the city have to continually replenish it. The bulkheads will keep it on shore but there is no stopping the wind from carrying it away. Bad idea.
