The one small parade I attended this year had 8 religious groups and only 2 bar floats and only one of them had go-go boys dancing to loud music. Of course, that is the one that will be promoted as representing the entire parade, but it was very diverse and pretty tame compared to years past.

Still a lot of fun, and the supreme court along with several states, gave us extra reasons to celebrate this year.

From the article: "To make the parade more 'family friendly' and to accommodate comfort for the increasing number of attending heterosexuals and corporate sponsorship, participants are being asked to cover up!" activist Daniel Scott Cates wrote on his Facebook page. "The 'queer' is effectively being erased from our pride celebration."

Mr. Cates' comment really makes no sense to me. Why can't queerness be expressed and celebrated while fully clothed?

Pride parades can be outrageous and provocative while being G-rated; just cover up the body parts and don't do anything that heteros don't normally do in public, behavior-wise.

Well, I've lived in the Midwest all my life, so maybe that sounds conservative to folks on the West Coast. Still, it would help our cause tremendously to tone down the sexual content of Pride celebrations. Remember that many of the people seeing footage of them are out here in "flyover country," and some of that stuff is shocking to even the LGBT people out here.

LGBT pride festivals and parades have the effect of uniting a very diverse community, and continue the original purpose of lobbying for equal rights, which continue to be denied.

They also continue the original purpose of bringing attention to the social injustice of legal discrimination and prejudice. Equal rights were the primary purpose of the gay rights demonstrations of the 50's and 60's, which then became gay rights marches of the 70's, then becoming gay pride parades and festivals in the 80's and into today.

Part of the change in focus from civil rights marches to a more celebratory nature is a result of not being afraid of being arrested and beaten just for being there. Education on a wide variety of topics from health to politics remains an important community function of the festivals as well.

Pride festivals and parades are simply another example of the many cultural celebrations intended to promote self worth and participation in community.

The primary difference is the LGBT population has not yet achieved full legal equality, while the other traditionally punished groups have. Yet Those who were legally punished within the lifetime of a large segment of the population, have not yet overcome the prejudice which supported their legal disenfranchisement. The multitude of mainstream cultural celebrations, celebrate aspects of culture other than legal disenfranchisement, because they were not legally disenfranchised as Americans, though many celebrations have their roots in overcoming some form of hardship. Celebrations help us get to know each other better, both within the community and within the larger culture.

"Men often hate each other because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they don't know each other because they can not communicate; they can not communicate because they are separated.

Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it.

The good neighbor looks beyond the external accidents and discerns those inner qualities that make all men human and, therefore, brothers.

We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools." (MLK)

I've marched in several Gay Pride Parades in New York, and I can understand how some people would find the fat lesbians from "Dykes On Bikes" with their bare boobs and nipples hangin out and droopin to be something NOT "tame" and something they really rather NOT see.

Have you asked any straight men how they feel about seeing all of those boobs, out of shape or not?

While not interested beyond variety, I'm not at all offended. I enjoy the celebration of freedom. Shirts off for everyone!

We need to get over our aversion to the human body and our celebration of violence. People get upset over skin, but pay to see people beat each other to a bloody pulp! Janet Jackson vs. the Super Bowl. Humanity vs. violence.

I went to a pride parade in Chicago years ago; that's the last one I'll ever attend.

Nothing but a freak show highlighting the worst stereotypes of the lgtb "community".

And we wonder why so many states still discriminate against us?

So don't go. Simple as that. Have mommy take you to the playground, so you can go down the slide.

I have to disagree. The overwhelming majority of people should NEVER be allowed to show any bare skin in public! Burkas for all!!

I've gone to many New York Gay Pride Parades, marched in them, and have always loved them. And yes, some of the lesbians with Dykes On Bikes are bare-breasted, and some are god-looking and some aint. If you don't like that, then look away.

Sorry. Yes, I saw the humor, but it took a very serious turn didn't it.... I have the TV on, and I guess I let the current shooting bring me back to seriousness.

Celebrate diversity.
That's what I'd like to say.

All of the out of shape bodies help us appreciate the in shape ones. Again, I'd like to say that.

But sometimes, a burka is just a good idea, especially when spandex is applied to the pillsbury dough body.

Years ago, I used to go to The Bunk House in Sayville every Friday nite for many years. Usually each Friday nite, there was this one old guy there with a HUGE mustache, who ALWAYS wore pinkish\reddish spandex tights. I can't IMAGINE what he was thinking. LOL

OK, let me get this straight. Being gay is synonymous with being an exhibitionist? Apparently, no one experiences "joyous sexiness" except gays because they are the only ones who have this need to parade around in broad daylight OUTSIDE showing lewd nudity and sexual behavior (and ignorance, as well), except for maybe the raging drunks at Mardi Gras (also ignorant), most of which will wake up the next day not only with a horrible hangover but a horrible sense of having defiled themselves as well. I must admit I am torn on this issue. One part of me understands this need to try to make gays decent for the general public, but another part of me relishes the fact that gays behave this way. Nothing shows how very different gays are from everybody else in the world like these "pride" parades. I would suggest that, instead of cleaning up the parades for the corporate sponsors and politicians, that said corporate sponsors and politicians quit kissing the butts of gays, keep their noses clean, and steer well clear of such debauchery. WAKE UP AND REALIZE THAT THE REST OF US THINK A LOT LESS OF CORPORATIONS AND POLITICIANS WHO GO TO THESE THINGS.

I have witnessed, and marched in, many New York Gay Pride Parades. And while some of the revelers may certainly be excessive in their displays, they are a tiny minority of LGBT people.

What REALLY offends me as a church-going Protestant is the ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE, whee all the Roman Catholics shove their deplorable lifestyle in the faces of god-fearing Protestants such as myself.

I don't mind Roman Catholics (alright I really do), but why do they have to parade it and shove their lifestyles in the faces of people who really don't want to see it ?! Just keep it behind closed doors like we decent Protestants do !

And while they parade their decadent lifestyle down the street with their signs proclaiming "ERIN GO BRAGH !", I stand their with a DECENT PROTESTANT sign with an opposing viewpoint that says "DEUTSCHLAND, DEUTSCHLAND, UBER ALLES !" :)(Martin Luther would approve.:))

I Object!!! To all of the attention the "gay" people bring to themselves. Why is it so important that you humiliate yourselves in front of the whole world!
Do you remember when you were afraid to tell anyone about your ...condition?
You hid it from everybody because why? You were embarrassed. Well there you have it gay person! Now you know how we feel every time a homosexual try's to make an argument for himself! It is embarrassing !
