I was in there just the other day, first time I had been there, the lady was actually super nice compared to some of the customer service I have had at other places. At least she did say "hi, how are you?" and "Have a nice day!" so sorry, can't agree with ya!

"up the valley" - WHICH ONE?- on the left, by Food Lion or the newer one way further up on the right? Personally, I've never been in the newer one, but if you're talking about the one by Food Lion, well you must have come at her way rude and nasty yourself, for that sweet lady to have to feel she had no choice but to dish it right back to you because otherwise no way! I can't even imagine it. You must be talking about the newer one up on the right....?

dollar general as a company sucks. they only staff the store with 1 cashier and if you are lucky another person that stocks the store and then the manager. sometimes it's just the manager and the cashier. if you are really lucky, that manager may actually come out and help the cashier on the register instead of letting the line back up all the way to the back of the store. i hardly ever shop at dollar general. i was set up and fired there and I have known a lot of other people in the area that have been done the same way as me. For the dollar difference, go to walmart. walmart sucks too, but at least you are saving 2 or 3 pennies or more rather than pay full price for it or more than full price at dollar general.

I knew when I read u were fired from Dollar General u would not have any thing good to say about them.At least they are making Walmart do a lot of things differently now, like build smaller stores and keep prices down.

I'm not sure if you know how business works, but when you buy a product, part of the price is paying for service. The reason the prices are low at some stores, like Dollar General, is because they cut corners on hiring beggars and avoid having 4-6 person staffs on a shift. So having 3 people at Dollar Store for a shift makes sense. As for saving two-three pennies at Walmart... Right. I'm sure people who live up the valley want to drive 40 mins to Walmart with gas prices like they are now, and save 3 cents while waiting in a massive line and dealing with crying kids and p*ssed off grandmas. If you find that more appealing and dislike the service at Dollar General so much, have fun in the sea of sweat that is Walmart.

Of course.. it looks like you just got fired and want to rant...

Momma Nerd, I'm sure that you have your 4 year degree at Roane State's business college and I'm sure that you know more about life than anyone on topix, because your post just comes across as a bitchy know it all, but here's the deal: I was actually set up. To protect my identity I won't divulge exactly what happened, but let's just say that a certain girl wanted me gone as an assistant manager and she seen a way to do it. Funny thing is, right after they got rid of me, she was promoted to assistant manager. UNLESS you have EVER worked for Dollar General, then you really don't have any room to talk. I assume that you are one of those nitpicky customers that THINKS they know all about customer service, but in reality you probably work a nice, cushy 9-5 job somewhere or you probably work some little factory or healthcare job. Step up behind the register sometime. I don't think you would last very long...or talk to any cashier at any store in Campbell County. It's not a great job and it's mentally hard to stand there and be nice to rude, bitchy ass people all day. The company sucks, plain and simple. Google the company name and you should find a website where current employees and former employees blog about how horrid it is to work in those places. And I know well from experience how horrible it is to work for Dollar General. As an Assistant Manager you are hourly. I made 9.50 an hour to run a store. If I was the only manager there, I couldn't take my LEGAL unpaid meal break, which is what the TN labor laws says you have to have. An unpaid, 30 min. meal break. I would have to clock out, and if anything came up, I would have to take care of it on MY TIME, my lunch break. Which, according to the Dollar General company's labor rules, was wrong and illegal. But good luck reporting it. They got rid of you if you started making any waves. I can name 5 people that worked for them, not fired that had several incidents like this and more happen to them. So, once again, if Dollar General is such a WONDERFUL company and SAVES you so much gas money, then maybe you should leave your cushy job and work for them. I'm sure they would chew you up and spit you out in a month's time. I rest my case now.....

Momma Nerd's advice would be great if she ACTUALLY knew what she was talking about. If you are comparing apples to oranges here, let's compare Food City to Save A Lot. Grocery stores. One has a lot of name brands and one has a lot of generic brands. Food City will sale an apple for 1.50 lb for example. Food City has stock clerks or 'baggers'(not beggers, though there sure are enough of those around here too). For the same apple at Save A Lot, you are only paying .96 cents a lb because the cashier bags all your stuff for you and they actually do have less employees hanging all over the place at Save A Lot.

But here is where I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the point of Dollar General Stores and this whole concept that they are SAVING anyone money. For example, Gain is 10.00 a box at Dollar General. Sure Walmart is 40 mins away from the Valley area give or take. Walmart has the same Gain box for 8.89. Tell me, exactly how do you 'save' money when you buy something for 1-3 more on average than you would to buy it from a lower discount retailer?

You really aren't saving anything at all. You are paying Dollar General a convienance fee not to go to walmart. Which, as a few people have pointed out, yes, walmart sucks, but I'd much rather pay 8.89 for Gain, than 10.00 for the same exact thing at Dollar General. And the lower prices at Walmart do add up depending on what you are buying.

And I am not pro-Walmart either. To get the best deals these days you really do have to shop around at different stores for different items. And it's just not the fact that I really do hate that coporation's ever loving guts either. I really do prefer not to shop there. I really didn't prefer to shop there before I was hired there, but that was years ago. But to each his own. If you love the place, great. Pay the extra money on average to shop there. It's not my bank account that's being drained...it's yours.

It doesn't matter how you feel about the company. You wen't bashing the company, you came on here ranting about a single cashier.. Come on. Apparently you've worked for the company and know they treat employees like crap.. so you should understand why an employee was in a bad mood, right? I mean if you couldn't stand there and be nice to people for hours a day, why should anyone else have to. Don't be hypocritical, which is it, you hate the company because it treats people like crap or you hate the cashier for treating you like crap, when she's probably miserable (by YOUR statements)

Of course, so far you're the only person who has had a problem with the (As yet unidentified) Dollar General in the valley.. somewhere... which just tells me you're bitter and want to whine. You're only making yourself look bad.. do you make it a habit to judge people so readily?

And don't go telling me I don't know what I'm talking about.. yes, I have a cushy job in healthcare.. I also worked my ARSE off for my own education, worked in a grocery store for 7 years, part of that through school, every shift, every job, bagging, cashier, stock, management, and I do have a little common sense on top of my education... Saving 6 bucks on the gas it takes driving from Old Middlesboro to Walmart is worth it when you're only saving 3 by going TO Walmart to get a single box of Gain.

Now how about instead of telling everyone else how bad Dollar General is, you tell us why the heck You where shopping there in the first place if you already knew it was so bad it needs to be boycotted?
been there too

@Momma Nerd

I don't know that it was the same person that started this thread is the same person shouting out about how it is to work for Dollar General but having worked Dollar General myself albeit years ago and not here, what I read of that post is pretty much the truth. It saddens me that it apparently hasn't changed from then to now. If it weren't for Dollar General's overall illegal and obtuse treatment of their NON management staff it really would be a nice place to work! Suppose you could say that of most all retail corps. today as since this economy has tanked seems that most all of them are about ripping both employees as well as customers off and treating both as non entities. Absolutely boggles the mind how they figure it's the only way to preserve their bottom line, but there you have it.

Maybe if you worried less about your lunch break and spent more time trying to protect your position, you int still find yourself employed. Do you always blame someone else for your shitty job performance?

Obviously, you've never picked up a college admissions catalog in your life. Roane State is a two year college you idiot. It's a great place to start in pursuit of a four year college degree. Now, is it my fault that your a high school graduate with no hope? GET A FREAKING LIFE!

Apparently you've never heard of sarcasm before you inbred redneck jerkoff!

Momma and Daddy didn't get to give me college money and pay for my car, etc. I have picked up a college form before. I'm still struggling to finish my degree because I don't have a cushy life. I stand on my own and do everything on my own. I don't have a nice little church crowd to help me everytime I praise Jesus and scream to the top of my lungs in church.

As for this topic, I hate Dollar General as a company. I don't actually shop there anymore. I was just commenting in general about the company also. To sum it up for everyone, the reason that the cashier was bitchy was because they put too much on one person to try to do and expect them to be come out smelling all fresh and friendly. It's America, and last time I checked it was a free country. I can post my opinion on here and you can kiss my ass!

As for Campbell County in general, I hate the God awful place. I have never in my life seen so many hypocrites, two faced, bitchy bastards in all my life. And as for living there, I don't anymore, thank God!
