National Guard Chopper Crashes

An Army National Guard Helicopter crashes this afternoon in Campbell County. Reports coming in to 1450wlaf.com from the Campbell County Sheriff's Department are that the chopper went down on a main TVA power source near Exit 141 (Huntsville-Oneida) on I-75 just before 6:00 p.m. Power is out and will be out for several more hours to residents in Pioneer, Jellico, Caryville, Jacksboro, and Vasper. The crash site is about a mile and a half off the interstate behind the Camel Manufacturing Building which is on the east side of I-75. More details to come as they become available to 1450wlaf.com and 1450 WLAF Radio.

We saw a couple of those dark Army green helicopters (Bell OH-58 Kiowa) with the big MMS ball on the rotor, flying over us at Cove Lake. One of them sounded funny like a car engine reving up and down.
30 minutes later heard the police scanner saying "All County, City, State authorities to not touch anything at crash site, Army on the way to perform investigation"

Campbell County has had it's share of tragedies today, hasn't it. Prayer goes out for the families.

You was right on the money "OH-58 Kiown" I'm guessing you've been in the military. Car engine reving up and down? Do YOU think something went wrong with the engine? I'm praying 4 the families.

I feel so bad for the loses. These men were serving our country and then lost their lives in training here.

Never joined the Military but I used to fly small single/twin engine prop aircraft.

I would be willing to bet those Kiowas were a part of the TN National Guard Drug Task Force. That Sighting System they use can aquire an infared target from up to 5 miles away and most of them are fitted with the latest and greatest in high-tech surveillance systems which is perfect for the war on drugs.

Not sure what was wrong with it though. Curious to see the outcome of the investigation.

Those pilots were not looking for drugs. They don't use that model of helicopter for that. They were on a routine training mission.

RIP Soldiers.
Thanks

It was ruled an accident. They were great men. The helicopter hit the lines for being a little too low. No mechanical failure. It was a training maneuver. They either dies on impact or possibly before they even hit the ground. They died doing what they love.
