A few years ago, article searches were unfruitful, a movie crew had to helicopter into one of the volcanoes for filming. The chopper engine failed and, if recollection is right, the engine on the rescue chopper failed too. Tom Hauptman, the famous Maui war and Magnum PI stunt pilot, accomplished the rescue and recovery.

Those gases and vapors are not healthy stuff!

This is one kind of a "blow-by-blow" account...

Kilauea is the only volcano that has been erupting over the last 15 years. I know, technicalities. It had been mostly out of P`u O`o, which is a vent on the eastern flank of Kilauea. This is where the helecopter went down.
Three weeks ago, Halema`uma`u crater opened up again, which located on the very tip (summit) of Kilauea. At first it was SO2, but now ash is being spewed to Ka`u.
If the trades were to switch to Kona winds not only would they be evacuating thousands of people from the summit area, the vog would drift to the other islands.

Remember the vog you guys had about a month ago? It'd be that times four, because at that time only one vent was going.

"On March 19, the 24-hour average levels of sulfur dioxide in Pahala exceeded federal ambient air quality state guidelines in what amounted to the equivalent of a bad pollution day in an urban area"

Um, Advertiser, the volcanic gases are different from smog!

Sounds like the writer was rushed to produce something after the media meeting they had yesterday.

Ok, I can see where Kim is getting irritated with people.

How can we expect the government to babysit us if certian things cannot be understood/measured?

There is about as much understood about Hawaiian volcanoes as the abyssmal zone of the ocean.

I was sliding down da side of da mountain on my koa plank. Surfing da kine volcanoe is da best. I looked down and the cavern opened and steam flew in my face. Da only ting I could think of was "Fate Yanagi I love you, Fate Yanagi I care, Please no go out with Mits Funai" Den da mountain one gobble me up.
No can play with mother nature, might have to move over da other side.
