GOP madness on display

The House and Senate Republican leaders want more deep cuts in spending that will cost jobs, and cut investments vital to our future in everything from education to R&D. For the tea-party right led by Texas freshman Sen. Ted Cruz, that’s not sufficient. Backed by deep-pocket outside groups like the Club for Growth, they are calling for shutting down the government unless Obamacare is defunded.

This is simple madness. President Obama once again laid out out a common sense, modest agenda on the budget. Make investments in education and infrastructure vital to our competitiveness. Don’t let immediate cuts sabotage our faltering recovery. Get our books in order with a balanced plan that combines asking corporations and the rich to pay their fair share with cutting wasteful programs and bloat.

House Republicans spurn these proposals out-of-hand. They want deeper cuts, all from domestic programs like education and clean water. They want more, not less money for the military. They oppose any increase in taxes, even objecting to closing down the tax dodges that reward companies for stashing money and reporting profits abroad. They want to repeal Obamacare without replacing it. They even are moving a bill to cut billions out of food stamps, a program that protects families in trouble from going hungry. And they are so divided among themselves that they have rejected their own leadership’s proposals to keep government open.

How Well Does Conservative Misinformation About Obamacare Work? New Chart Illustrates: Pretty Well

Mother Jones’ Kevin Drum created a new chart yesterday that illustrates how well Americans understand Obamacare amidst conservatives’ relentless manipulation of the facts. Apparently, their misinformation works pretty well.

Drum looked at the results of an Affordable Care Act quiz (you should take it!) put out by a health foundation several months ago and found that the questions that were most frequently answered incorrectly were the ones that asked about issues conservatives have worked tirelessly to distort.

Americans Hate Obamacare, While Loving Everything About It

While 56 percent of Americans hate the law, while a plurality of 45 percent of Americans will vote for a candidate who wants to repeal the law, a full 82 percent love the law’s “pre-existing conditions” language. 61 percent support the section of the law that allows kids to stay on their parents’ insurance until age 26. 72 percent support requiring corporations to cover employees. And so forth.

Forget the Polls. Here's the Real Obamacare News that Broke Monday.

the biggest news on Monday wasn’t about Obamacare’s poll numbers. It was about Obamacare’s reach. And there the news was much clearly better. In Michigan, Republican Governor Rick Snyder signed a bill that will expand the state’s Medicaid program, as Obamacare envisions. The signing was the culmination of a long, difficult effort by Synder and a bipartisan, statewide-coalition to overcome Tea Party resistance….

…. Greg Sargent got Pew to give him a breakdown of exactly which voters oppose the law so much they want officials to make it fail: Sure enough, it’s Tea Party Republicans. As Greg notes, this voting bloc is highly influential within Republican Party politics, particularly as primary voters: That goes a long way to explaining why congressional Republicans are threatening to shut down the government or allow default if Obama won’t agree to delay or defund the law.

But support for such extreme positions doesn’t extend much outside this group. Meanwhile, it turns out that many people opposed to (or at least ambivalent about) the law simply don’t know much about it….

Amid Revolt Over Fiscal ‘Gimmicks,’ Options Dwindle for G.O.P.

First came the “supercommittee,” tasked in 2011 with finding a bipartisan deficit reduction plan but doomed to fail. Then came the “McConnell plan,” a way for Congress to raise the government’s debt limit without actually voting to do so. And in January there was “no budget, no pay,” a measure coupled with the last debt ceiling increase to deny paychecks to lawmakers if they did not pass a budget…..

For three years, Congressional leaders have relied on tactical maneuvers, sleights of hand and sheer gimmickry to move the nation from one fiscal crisis to the next — with little strategy to deal with the actual problems at hand….

President Obama joined the fray Monday, castigating Republicans for the latest budget crisis but “hoping that a light bulb goes off.”

Obama, Republicans, and the Crisis of Legitimacy

…. Since taking control of the House of Representatives in 2011, a coterie of Republicans has challenged this informal approach. Their belief is that the absence of cooperation should lead not to stalemate but to the president bending to their will. That assumption implies a delegitimization of the presidency that Obama has come to understand, belatedly, that he can’t accept.

The Republican Establishment is trying to coax the crisis-mongers out of their fervor. Today The Wall Street Journal editorial page assails Republicans who insist on shutting down the government unless President Obama agrees to destroy his own health-care reform, a fantastical demand.“Kamikaze missions rarely turn out well, least of all for the pilots,” the Journal warns.

…. Establishment Republicans are trying to talk their base out of extreme measures without addressing their deeper belief that House Republicans are entitled to extract concessions from the president, via threat, without compromising at all.

Crusade against Texas clinics based on bogus claims

Texas Gov. Rick Perry and his Republican allies in the state legislature launched an aggressive legislative campaign against reproductive rights over the summer, including measures intended to close the vast majority of clinics where reproductive services are provided.

Proponents of the policies said the measures were necessary in order to protect public safety. Becca Aaronson reports in the Texas Tribune this week that the arguments are plainly contradicted by the facts…..

Republicans Like The Affordable Care Act More Than Obamacare

Republicans like the 2010 health care law better when it's called by its proper name -- the Affordable Care Act -- instead of Obamacare, according to a new Fox News poll.

Republican support for the law jumped eight percent, from 14 percent for Obamacare to 22 percent for the Affordable Care Act, when pollsters revised the question's language.

Overall support increased from 34 percent to 39 percent with the change. Democratic support moved one percent; independent support rose four percent.

Economy killers: Inequality and GOP ignorance

By failing Econ 101, Republican leaders failed the country and repeated the errors that caused the Great Depression

Whatever the precise channels of influence, the result is a political environment in which Mitch McConnell, leading Republican in the Senate, felt it was perfectly okay to declare before the 2010 midterm elections that his main goal, if the GOP won control, would be to incapacitate the president of the United States:“The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”

Needless to say, this is not an environment conducive to effective anti-depression policy, especially given the way Senate rules allow a cohesive minority to block much action. We know that the Obama administration expected to win strong bipartisan support for its stimulus plan, and that it also believed that it could go back for more if events proved this necessary. In fact, it took desperate maneuvering to get sixty votes even in the first round, and there was no question of getting more later.

This Recession Brought to You by the Republican Party

The hedge funders didn't really create the problems we now face. They just took advantage of it. Reaganomics created this mess. It is the unnatural fruit of deregulation and laissez-faire economic policy. This economic crisis was built on great (and ever so colonialist) American notions like Manifest Destiny--that there was always a farther horizon to reach, and a never-ending supply of "empty" newness to fill up and commodify. As Edward Abbey once said, "Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell." He left out, "and the ideology of the Grand Ol' Party."

FISA Court rules metadata collection constitutional

The Court, after having fully considered the United States Government's earlier filed proposed application...and having held an extensive hearing to receive testimony and evidence on this matter on July 18, 2013, granted the application for the reasons stated in this memorandum opinion and in a primary order issued July 19, 2013, which is appended hereto.

In conducting its review of the government's application the court considered whether the Fourth Amendment to the US Constitution imposed any impediment to the government's proposed collection. Having found none in accord with US Supreme Court precedent, the court turned to Section 215 to determine if the proposed collection was lawful and that orders requested from this court should issue. The court found that under the terms of Section 215 and under operation of the canons of statutory construction such orders were lawful and required, and the requested orders were therefore issued.

This Time It’s Boehner, Not Obama, Who Needs To Avoid A Government Shutdown

Barack Obama pledged again today that he “will not negotiate over the full faith and credit of the United States”— that is, over the debt limit. Remember that until Republicans took control of the House in 2011, the debt limit had never been used to force significant substantive changes — because, after all, both sides ultimately support raising the debt limit, so it’s a lousy negotiating chip. On the other hand, it’s long been accepted that the debt limit vote is one that Members of Congress don’t like to take, and so finding some symbolic fig leaf (or bundling it with other legislation) does have a long history.

So a shutdown (or a debt limit breach) has to end with Boehner (supposedly) selling out conservatives, and doing it with far more press coverage and attention than he would get from (again, supposedly) selling them out before a shutdown by cutting a deal. That’s a disaster for him — and, on the other side of the Capitol, for Mitch McConnell — and one he’ll work hard to avoid.
