It isn't the age of the schools that determined which one got funds. They only got half of their requested amount, and Fifth is the one that needs the new building most.(Don't get me wrong - I agree with anyone who says Newbern needs a new school b/c they definitely do!!!) Fifth has about half of their students in portable buildings. They also have ONE set of restrooms for all classes K-5. The cafeteria/gym/auditorium is so small that they can't even have whole school programs at once - they have to split. So, it's not just the condition of the school that factored into the determination - it was the fact that Fifth's building is really too small.

My hope is that funds come from somewhere to get Newbern a new building soon, too!

Newbern has already gotten a new school. They also got plenty of remodeling funds along the way. If Newbern wanted a new grammar school, they should have built one. Maybe the city should come up with some funds for the schools there. How does that work? Dyersburg has to fork out plenty of dough, but the city of Newbern nothing?

You don`t have a clue as to what you are saying. To begin with it`s not Newbern, it`s the county. Second, Newbern has and does contribute major bucks into the county school system. Third, county tax dollars, by law have to distributed between the county and city school systems (dyersburg). So not only is Newbern helping with the county schools, they also help with dyersburg city schools as well. Check your facts

They knew all along that the money they were asking for would only go to fifth!!Children at Newbern Grammar have to go in portable buildings to!! It doesn't cost 8.8 million to put in another bathroom and septic system!!! Are the children of Newbern schools considered second rate!!Why is the city of Newbern putting up with this crap!!

Well, I'm sorry that Newbern didn't get their request.

If you look at what was given to Dyersburg and Dyer County you will see that it is around $11.8 Million. That's about 10% of the monies.

Memphis and Nashville got about half the money so for us to get 10% is pretty good.

I'm just curious...Where did the playground equipment come from? Newbern has the best playground equipment of any school (county and/or city) I've ever seen. Why don't the other schools get all of that?

Most was donated. I don't know by who. They have had it just for a few years. Most parents aren't happy with the black stuff below the swing set. The little ones fall alot and ruin their clothes. I'd rather have ruined clothes that broken arms.

I guess Newbern will have to seriously consider any means possible of getting a new building when parents of handicapped children there finally sue, because the school is NOT handicap accessible by any means and they are not interested in making it so. Our handicapped children are second rate citizens in this school system.

Look in your strudent handbook for the Title VI - if any child is denied that school system will be in great trouble. Look regarding the handicap/disabled or what most call "learning diabled Titles because the school must meet the special needs of children. The school system receives federal grants for these programs also and they MUST meet the criteria! You will get attention once you inform the superintedent that you will be contacting Nashville regarding this lack of care! Go for it!

Personally I think that Finley is in need of a new school. That school is how old? But Fifth is very small compared to Newbern. Everyone is complaining about which school got what but Finley doesn't even have a air unit in there gym. The kids are sweating in there especially on programs. The parents have made request but they always say that they can't afford the utility bill each month. That is bull. Our kids health is more important. So when everyone complains just remember that.
