It would be helpful to know the sex and age of each bear before speculating as to what is behind the high number of "in defense of life and property" shootings this summer. If most of the bears were juvenile males or yearling and two-year cubs, it might indicate a big spike in breeding success in the valley over the last two years or so. Or it could be a combination of breeding success and urban sprawl. I'm not a global-warming denier, but somehow I don't see that as a probable factor.
