I've only read about this upcoming movie as I was once an airdale in the USCG and can't wait to see how authentic it really is. I understand from talking with my other flyguy friends this movie is loosely based on 2 cousins that used to fly rescue with us. One a Larry Farmer and the other a Kenny Farmer. Kenny was involved in a fatal crash in Alaska that killed most of his flight crew. He went on flying and was one of the highest decorated flyguys in the USCG but got out after his first 4 year stint (probably thought he'd had enough of risking destiny!). His cousin Larry stayed in for 30 yrs and became a famed instructor of lifesaving at the USCG aviation training center.

The movie is NOT loosely based (or otherwise) on Larry Farmer (who was never a "famed" instructor)..or Kenny Farner (who was not even CLOSE to being one of the highest decorated flyers in the USCG.)

The movie is a complete work of fiction...but it does look like its going to be good.

Oh really??? on kid!!! I knew both, flew with both back in San Diego AS in the early 70's...

"Farmer led implementation of the USCG Rescue Swimmer Program beginning in 1985. He managed 300 Rescue Swimmer personnel nationwide. He trained and qualified pilots, aircrew, and rescue swimmers in three helicopter types at over twenty different air stations. He wrote the original Helicopter Rescue Swimmer Operations Manual which defines policy for operations, training, equipment, and communications. Farmer has also appeared on several documentary’s detailing the development of the USCG Rescue swimmer program.

Larry and his wife Christine were in attendance at The Guardian World Premiere. They both expressed what a great time they had rubbing elbows with the stars and dignitaries. When asked what he thought about all the glitz and glamour, Larry stated “he was just happy that the popcorn and soda were free.”

Larry and his wife also attended the Premier Party where they both had a lot more then just Popcorn and soda to choose from."

We know where Larry is, Kenny's still out there somewhere too!!!!

Bill's correct on this. I also was a/c on numerous with both Kenny and Larry (more Kenny than Larry though). This Costner character would definately be a composit of both Kenny and Larry.

Larry we all knew was a lifer but a "by the book and paperwork" ASM. Kenny wasnot by any book and just went out and got the job done. Don't remember his rating though.

I was on the hoist in the H3 when I lowered Kenny dressed only in his underware and his flight boots hanging with his feet through a horseshoe collar down to a sailboat with a family of 3 on board that was breaking up in the middle of a hurricane. The flight out was bad enough loosing an engine on the way, but seeing him pluck each of those people one at a time was something else. That was in the days before floatation suits, swimfins, mask and snorkels. You went in, you were gone! I can tell you he was nuts! I saw it. Heard Kenny was up for a DFC on that one. Also heard about his time in Alaska prior to all this and what probably drove him to thinking he was inmortal.

I believe Bill's right in that this is a composite character by Costner of both Kenny and Larry. Guess we know what happened to Larry, anyone know where Kenny is or if he's alive still?

I saw the film last night and thought they did a pretty good job of representing us. I was in the first ASM "A" school class required to complete the training at the Navy school in FL. The day that we graduated ASMMC Larry Farmer personally flew down from E-City to congradulate us. The man was bigger than yes...If Costners character was based on anyone it would have to be him...and a bunch of other Marco Hyde (although I don't think he was ever a swimmer...just nuts.)
Proud to have served.
