The Command here can care less what their members do within the community. if you phone them and tell them there is a problem they wont even look into it or return you calls, they claim to have this military code of conduct this is never enforced at the Kodiak base, it needs to be removed from this branch of service. They can care less! dont pretend to have this higher standard if it means nothing i would like to know how other people feel about the problems between Kodiak Coast Guard and the local people!! Not to mention how they drive up the prices around here on everything even with our strapped economy they sure dont appear to be feeling it.

im sorry you have got the wrong impression i have many friends locally and millitary. Most of the coasties i know are very friendly, carring, and helpful, same as the townies. That being said we are the millitary, most of us come from very different walks of life. Professionally we arent directly involved in community affairs. You should however think of how many fisherman lives would be lost and laws would be broken if we werent up here. As far as inflation, this is a remote island with a high demand vs. supply, its simple economics. The cost of living here is much less than south florida. lol. :D

First of all, you are making a generalization on Coast Guard members. Most of them do hold to their values. If you have run across a Coastie who has treated you poorly, than that individual should be held responsible and you should not shun a whole group of people without just cause. Every person, military or not, is different in how they treat others and express themselves.

Second, Coasties have no control over inflation. Most military members make just enough in their pay check to live and the change in economy hurts them as well. If the Coast Gaurd was to pull out of the city of Kodiak, the economy here would take an even further dive. People would loose jobs, less money would be put into the community, houses would be abandoned and much more. An action like that could have the possibility of destroying this town. Kodiak would not be where it is today without the Coast Guard being here. If you want to live on an Alaskan Island somewhere without the Coast Guard, there are plenty around where the population is lower, jobs are harder to find, and the prices of goods is alot higher.

Last but not least, most "Coasties" and local members of this community are great friends and live friendly, happy lives together. We help eachother out and co-exist peacefully. There are people, locals and Coasties, that unfortunatly cause more friction in the community and are the makers of the hate and discontent that they themselves dislike so much. If you have a personal issue with someone, it doesn't matter if they are Coast Guard or local. You need deal with the situation with the individual(s) in question to solve your problems.

The problem is the command here in Kodiak covers up problem members. when a local confronts the command they pass the buck to someone else. then that person wont even give the local the respect or show they are at least concerned enough to return a phone call, investigate the complaint, or at least listen to the person complaining. where i come from if a complaint was filed then it was ALWAYS investigated. with a return phone call placed to the person filing the complaint followed by a letter stating the results of the investigation not just blowing the people off. my problem is with the way the command blew me off with a problem with one of the members NOT with every member of the coast guard, because most do their job like the rest of us. but some of the CG walk around here like they own this island and like each and everyone of us owe them something. im here to tell you the command is acting UNPROFESIONAL in regards to listening to complaints made by the local people. sometimes just a person listening will do a world of good but the command here wont even do that. as if they are just to good to listen. and dont tell me they are just to busy to return a phone call. there is no excuse for this we the tax payer are the one paying their salaries. and as a tax payer i deserve at least to have someone listen to me. my complaint was legit and the command just blew me off like i was nobody and to this day the command has not responded to my complaint let me ask you how would you feel?
