First of all, you are making a generalization on Coast Guard members. Most of them do hold to their values. If you have run across a Coastie who has treated you poorly, than that individual should be held responsible and you should not shun a whole group of people without just cause. Every person, military or not, is different in how they treat others and express themselves.
Second, Coasties have no control over inflation. Most military members make just enough in their pay check to live and the change in economy hurts them as well. If the Coast Gaurd was to pull out of the city of Kodiak, the economy here would take an even further dive. People would loose jobs, less money would be put into the community, houses would be abandoned and much more. An action like that could have the possibility of destroying this town. Kodiak would not be where it is today without the Coast Guard being here. If you want to live on an Alaskan Island somewhere without the Coast Guard, there are plenty around where the population is lower, jobs are harder to find, and the prices of goods is alot higher.
Last but not least, most "Coasties" and local members of this community are great friends and live friendly, happy lives together. We help eachother out and co-exist peacefully. There are people, locals and Coasties, that unfortunatly cause more friction in the community and are the makers of the hate and discontent that they themselves dislike so much. If you have a personal issue with someone, it doesn't matter if they are Coast Guard or local. You need deal with the situation with the individual(s) in question to solve your problems.
