I'm sorry for this woman's family and friends.

It sounds like a very typical bad-roads accident--a tiny miscalculation in unfamiliar territory can turn everything upside-down in a heartbeat.

As a former Chicoan who now lives in Bend I can say that I HATE this stretch of highway. Especially in the winter. I spun out on it a week ago and was hit by a driver. When i drive it to see family in the bay area its like white knuckle driving. I probably won't do it again until the snow is gone. You usually see on average between 5-10 trucks and suvs slid off the side of the road between Bend and the border. I rarely see cars off the road. I say this because the 4x4 and SUV drivers think they can drive fast on the ice and packed snow no problem. Then they're in the ditch or the bumper of an oncoming vehicle. 4 years ago we were on our way up for New Years and a family of 5 from Davis, CA were killed when their SUV hit head on with a big rig. I feel for this ladies family. I guess these accidents are going to happen unless people are driving 10-20 miles an hour. I like to do 35-40 while others will do 60. I also recommend doing it in the daylight.
