New Outer Banks Park?
Dare County is planning a new 11-acre park in Kitty Hawk.

A county posting is seeking architectural and engineering services for the park which is planned for a parcel of land across from the town Fire Department on Kitty Hawk Road.

As planned, the park will be adjacent to Kitty Hawk Woods and consist of:

1,800 foot walking trail with markers and benches
Dog park
Picnic area
Skate park
Play ground
Double tennis court
Basketball court
This would be a great addition to the area. Applications will be opened October 30th in Manteo.

I am not sure we need this now with all the other town money problems. The fire dept needs to hire more full time firemen or the towns insurance goes way up. Shortages in tax revenue are way up with homes sales slowing. Reassessments of property values are in the future and will likely go down requiring tax rates to go up to cover costs. The new multi million dollar un-needed Viper radio system is going to go in soon costing more money.

Now is NOT the time for a expensive park. Why do politicians all want to spend so much money?

I have to agree, not the time to spend that kind of money. We need to keep a tight rein on the budget and not spend on luxury items.

Depends on the type of grant the county has obtained for the park. Many of the grants are 50/50 payout-it would be great if this grant were more or multiple grants could be applied for. If the county has secured the grant, they will have to have a plan approved within a certain amount of time or loose the grant. As it stands, we've already paid the costs of obtaining the grant, if we let it expire and refile, we'll pay again.

I think this park is a great idea and I can't wait to use the dog park and other amenities once it is open.

The Town of Kitty Hawk has nothing to do with the construction of this park. The Town will issue permits, but there is no use of Town monies. The County has a grant to start construction, and they will take care of any additional funding.

I am excited for this park. The children in this town need a place where they can go to play where it is fun and safe. For as long as I can remember there has been a KH Rec Ctr on the books and this subject is nothing new. I believe once the skate park and the indoor pool are built it will generate income for the town, by offering membership passes and daily admission this should offset cost of keep up at least. I want Kitty Hawk to be a more family friendly community which I am proud to live in. Thank you Town of Kitty Hawk for moving forward with this.(I was hoping it wasnt going to be another 10 years until we saw something done with that property)

Thank you Concerned for explaining where the funding was coming from. Informative.

I think this is wonderful for the community and people who live here year round. I have lived in KH for 17 years and have been waiting for this to happen. This could open up new jobs for us here in Kitty Hawk (alot of people have been laid off just waiting for new jobs to happen). I encourage anything that will develop good things for our neighborhood, children, and possibly new jobs for people. Funding for parks are usually federal money grants associated with state and town. Go for it!

What type of luxury items? This is a park for our Kitty Hawk community, not a new sail boat or jaguar like realtors or bankers would buy. This is something good for the community and would lift the spirts up for children and community to see something beautiful happen. We need this right now because everyone has nothing to look forward to with this economy the way it is. They have to do something to give life to our dying beach.

I personally oppose this park. I feel the county has no business building this park in a town. Why doesn't Kitty Hawk build it? Why are they building an expensive park when they have had to cut back on every county departments budget? You people should really pay attention on how the county board is blowing your tax dollars. If you did you would be disgusted. If the county can't afford to give its employees raises or not jack their insurance rates up, then it can't afford this park. The county should let the towns worry about themselves and the county worry about the unincorporated areas and county employees.

If you live in Kitty Hawk, especially Kitty Hawk Road. You will be complaining about the excessive traffic once this waste of money is built.

You sound like a jilted county employee that didnt get his raise this year. Sorry. Most of us on this sandbar work hard for many many years at the same job and have never recieved a pay raise. We dont recieve 401ks, insurance or county cars. You are very lucky not to have lost your precious county job. Building a park is not the reason for you not getting your beloved pay raise. If you had done your homework before speaking you would have realized that the money is comming in a form of a Federal grant not county. If this money is not put to use it will be lost.Sorry that the federal grant isnt intended for the county to use the money to give pay raises to its employees. I know once you have spoken to the Town of Kitty Hawk or your higher ups in Dare County about this cituation your mind will be somewhat put to ease. Except for someone or something you blame about your precious pay raise cituation. Good Luck.

Oh dear, yes I do think a park is a luxury. And yes, if it's paid for by a federal grant that money could be better spent. Maybe use grant moneys such as that to give our fighting men and women a raise, or better care when they return home wounded, use that money to help out some of their struggling families. Just a thought. I'm not antipark, just feel as a nation we need to learn to live within our means and learn to prioritize what really matters. No, I'm not for national health care or hight taxes (just thought I stop that before it started!!!) Smile, it's a beautiful day.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you make this sound as if federal grants are going to pay for 100% of this park. Wasn't the total purchase price of the property over 1 million and the grant only covered half of the purchase price? Are federal grants going to cover 100% of the construction costs, salaries of the employees once it is built and maintenance to keep everything up?

I never stated that the grant was going to pay for the whole project...of course not. The 11 ac. property was bought a few years ago at a high market value...thats life. As far as salaries of employees I am assuming that you mean when the pool and skate park are built, none would be before then. As I stated before you can charge for the ramp usage (average price per kid $5-10 per visit or offer memberships) Same for the pool. Membership/dues for upkeep. The children of this town need a place that is close. Where do you take your child to have fun? Not Kitty Hawk. Do you even have children? Why give back free money? Dont go off at me about where you believe that the grant money should go..Call your local Basnight or Pres. Obama. I didnt ask for the cash but its being offered so why not? Its not like we turn it down and it goes to one of your causes, it goes to another city that would take the cash and use it as we should have.

Wow I have really touched a nerve. I did not say you stated the grants would cover 100%. I stated you make it sound like they would. Whether I have children or not is none of your business. I guess the children of Kitty Hawk have survived all this time without such a facility. Involved parents can find things for their children to do around here. How about school sports, Scouts, fishing, hunting, bike riding, surfing, just to name a few.

If the parents really want an indoor pool, the YMCA has a nice indoor pool. Barrier Island Fitness Center also has a nice indoor pool.

But if you really feel the children of Kitty Hawk need this facility to have "fun", then I also feel the children of East Lake, Manns Harbor, Stumpy Point, Wanchese, Manteo, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village also need the same facilities.

One more thought I will leave you with is this. This facility will not only attract Kitty Hawk residents, it will attract people from all over the beach. It will attract some people that most of you would not even want to live next to. Anyone on here ever been to Parks and Rec on Mustian Street in KDH? Ever noticed they hire off duty police for security? Once this facility is built in Kitty Hawk, it will surely attract the same clientel.

Good Day!

No nerve touched here...you miss read my post yet again.

I do use the pool at BI and the Y. Town of Kitty Hawk has stated that a pool will be built at a later date. With that being said I dont expect to see a pool for at least 5-10 years. I believe thats just a wish/dream.

I am glad that you feel other children in surrounding areas need a facility too. That isnt the issue. They dont have a grant now do they? If you feel so strongly, petition your local leaders and stand up for the children there. BTW..Dont the children of Hatteras have a new pool facility that was just built?

I also take my children to KDH rec ctr. I have always felt safe there. Its not about how children have survived all this time without, its about giving children the opportunities to flurish with something new.

I know that Im not going to change your mind on this subject..that was never my intentions. It was nice to debate with you. Good Night.

Sorry, lady, but the park will not be paid for by a federal grant. What the county got was a state grant that won't cover half the cost of the park

Then Yankee... what would you suggest... maybe another "storage unit site" off of the Woods Road? And by the way, why don't you volunteer your time to help families... all of us do now and volunteer with so many other events and causes here on the Outer Banks... so don't tell us we do not need a part! This is something all families need right now to lift this heavy burden of feeling so low and not being able to go anywhere with our children and pets to have fun. Take that to the bank.

Daily Horoscope for December 22

Leo

If you ask someone to give you a hand today, don't be surprised if they make a mess of it. That's probably because their mind isn't on the job, but it might also be because your instructions aren't as clear as usual. So before you get angry, check that what you said made sense. Relations with someone older or more influential than you could also be blighted by confusion or doubt now.
