Too far away and too hard to get to.

We drove over from Conifer after it opened last suumer and it was the same good old coney island food. We drove over today and were appalled to find that they are using different chile that tastes like it came from a can. The dogs don't get cooked on the rollers anymore, they are in hot water and then they put them on the griddle for a minute or two, they come out lukewarm. It must be new management. Also my son reported the shakes had gone way downhill too. They have ruined the best chile dogs in the world!

Coney Island is one of my fondest memories of living in Colorado.
Sorry to hear it has gone downhill...especially the hot doggies and the great shakes they made. Next thing I'll be hearing is that y'all have paved Elk Creek Road...NO! What the heck was the name of that really cool mountain bar/restaurant there on the way to Pine.. just after Old Stagecoach Road...mmmm what a terrific place..summer or winter didn't matter it rocked. I miss Colorado sooo much but at least here in Florida we have no state income taxes. |

There is a gravel road that goes up the mountain behind the Buck Snort called "Old Stage Coach Road" which it actually was. Our cabin was at the end of that road near the turnaround. Lived there from 1985-1990 then sold it to move to Wyoming.
Wonder if it's still there after all the forest fires in that area? Nobody would ever insure it because of that fire hazard and the way they were constructed mostly using tree stumps and bed rock for foundations. We put a well in ..had to go down 550 feet for water but kept the outhouse there instead of putting in a septic system. Never forget those trips to the ole outhouse in the middle of winter!! Makes you think twice before eating anything. lol Lots of Mountain Lions in that area. One tried to kill our 120 pound arctic wolf one night but the wolf returned home after 3 days all bloodied up but healed up fine...Never located the Cougar. Nice talking with you and enjoy your life in Texas. |

WOW! Sounds like you had an interesting experience having a cabin near Pine. We lived in Kings Valley for 4 years late 70's. Didn't encounter any mountain lions but heard they had been cited. We will be going to Denver this summer and am sure we'll spend some time near Conifer and Pine. Will have to go to the Buck Snort. Just have to get the Colorado fix every year.
Nice talking to someone who is familiar with the area:) |

If you really do get out in the Pine area and get a change please take a few minutes to go up Old Stage Coach Road and see if there is still a rather large pinewood siding 2 story cabin there at the top just before the road turns right to the turnaround.
The address is 16097 Old Stage Coach Rd and you will know it by the fact that it sits right on the very edge of the road while all the other cabins sit back a ways..Also it is at the very top of the road!! Right hand side. Thank you in advance if you do get a chance. Enjoy! |

Will definitely check it out!

Just moved to Conifer a month ago from Baton Rouge, LA - My girlfriend and I love it - can't wait to visit the bucksnort.
I finally took Warren Miller's advice and move to ski country, because if you wait till next year you'll just be one year older. |

You will love the change. Just make sure you have 4 wheel drive.
Our 4 wheel drive Toyota Land Cruiser got stuck in the 24 " + snow on several occasions. Jefferson County probably still plows Elk Creek Rd [to the Bucksnort from 285] but watch out for the side roads from there in the springtime snows! We envy you. Enjoy. |

Are you referring to The Bucksnort? In Sphynx Park? I loved that place!! It changed over the years too. Kinda turned sports bar.

Yup. The fantastic Buck Snort Saloon on Elk Creek Rd near Pine, Co.
Our cabin was 500 feet straight up the mountain from it and we could hear the fantastic music on warm summer nights. Voted Colorado's best mountain bar on a few occasions. |
