While being this way may be a choice initially, at least in the appearance aspect of it, a case can be made that some choices are so fundamental to the individual that they might as well not be a choice. For instance, if the CHOICE of people to be of certain religions (even in spite of religions having disgusting hate-filled doctrines, intolerance, and even animal sacrifice) is legally protected, as well as political affiliation, then clearly some things that are choices are considered worthy to protect enough to make the choice vs. nonchoice thing into a nonissue.
I do not want to live my life always being told what to wear and how to act. It is extremely difficult for me, and utterly exhausting. Perhaps it's fine for other people, but for me it is maddening. I just can't work at a place with ridiculous dress codes (And I can't even imagine what school must be like nowadays, considering all I've endured.) I wouldn't even be able to concentrate on my job. I don't understand why more of us with "unconventional appearances" don't CREATE jobs so we can hire more people like us and become self-sufficient, rather than having to rely on the society at large. We are intelligent, educated, articulate, ambitious, and perfectly capable of getting the job done right.
