Lawyer lands behind bars

By Damon Lawrence

Friday, September 28, 2012 at 12:01 am (Updated: September 28, 12:31 am)
Attorney Spence Bruner of Roane County was arrested for contempt of court on Wednesday.
According to an order from the Court of Criminal Appeals in Knoxville, Bruner was ordered to appear before a panel of the court on Sept. 18.
The court directed that a warrant be issued for his arrest after he failed to show up.
Bruner, of 211 Riggs Chapel Road, Harriman, was booked into the Roane County Jail at 11:16 a.m. He was released a short time later on a $5,000 bond.
According to the Court of Criminal Appeals, the 41-year-old Bruner failed to comply with orders of the court and the rules of appellate procedure.
He was ordered to appear before a panel of the court on Oct. 23 at the Tennessee Supreme Court building in Knoxville.
He must show cause why he shouldn’t be held in contempt of court and punished.
This isn’t the first time Bruner has faced disciplinary action in his legal career.
On March 25, 2011, he was temporarily suspended from practicing law. According to the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility, the suspension was “due to his substantial noncompliance with his monitoring agreement with the Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program.”
Bruner was reinstated a month later after a hearing panel recommended the temporary suspension be dissolved.
Bruner was also temporarily suspended in 2008 and censured in 2005.

Interesting. Last week his law partner, Donice Butler, was the subject of an article about complaints filed against her and a pending hearing to take her license. They are getting a lot of publicity. Probably not the best time to hire this firm.

I hired him over $1000 and then in court he let me get drilled and this was not even court for a legal charge I was not arresred or anything it was more civil type issue. I spoke for myself and the judge said are u gonna let ur lawyer speak for u? So I answered well does not seem like he is doing very good at that so Ill represent myself . I fired him and won the case myself!

I was in the Roane county Juvenile court last Tuesday. Spence Bruner could hardly stand on his own feet. He stuttered and slurred and swayed couldn't remember what he was saying. Everyone in the court room new he was higher than a damn kite. Some of the other attorneys where laughing at him. I personally thought it was disgusting and no laughing matter. Our tax paying dollars are paying him to represent in this case juveniles and HE'S STONED outa his flipping mind! Why the hell is he still being permitted to practice law and handle court appointed cases? I could be wrong but I doubt it. It is a judges responsibility, duty to report such behavior in his court room to the appropriate authorities and take some kind of action. Why is everyone looking the other way and making a joke out of it? This is or should be a very serious matter and delt with

Remember, it took the FBI to bring Baumgartner down because the local good ol' boys wouldn't do it. It's about time for the FBI to make another swing through East TN. Hmmmm, I wonder how the Interstate Spa in Rockwood was able to stay in business when the FBI ran Operation White Spider and shut down rub & tugs all across TN.

"Rub N Tugs"! That's funny as crap. I don't really have an issue with whore houses or massage parlors. What ever you want to call them. I kind of agree with how Nevada deals with the issue. I know my opinion on the topic of legalized prostitution isn't a popular one but its my opinion. I have. Never been a patron of one nor have I been in such a filed of employment but my reasoning is as follows...1) They stimulate the economy (no pun intended) 2) they pay taxes 3) They employ whores legally and monitor for STD's, HIV and require strict condom usage. 3) They require their employees to be drug free.
There's always going to be prostitution. It's not going away. Roane county had an extremely high rate of HIV and other STD's. if you talk to someone at the health dept. They will tell the percentage of infections from STD's is very high in married women who have not or admittedly not had affairs on their husbands. What does that tell you?
But back to the topic Mr. Bruner or am to understand that we are not only paying for his drug addiction but a sex addiction as well?

He has not gone to jail in over 20 years, do some research before you say something. I knowing this guy, he goes through some hard shit.

I don't know why none of you like this man, he helped me through so much. I had 2 sons and 1 daughter, and their father had custody of them. I tried to get my babies back so may times with other lawyers. I don't know why I just didn't find him first. Even my children loved him. The children's father is a very wealthy man, so I'm sure he must of had a good lawyer.

God bless this man. I know he is going through a very rough time right now. Maybe it is true, maybe you should wait a few weeks to hire him. But trust me, he knows what he is doing.

Spence is twice the lawyer compared to most of the lawyers in roane county He's just had some troubles with women who lead him down the primrose path. He's sharp when he's "right", none better. He's up thar wih the cooley's on smarts, just needs to straighten up. Not all are agan him, he's twice the man of some of these other bozos in suit and ties.

The best lawyer I've seen perform in Roane County was named McDaniel and was from Knoxville. The case I saw was the criminal trial of a Kingston firefighter who was arrested by the current Kingston Chief of Police a number of years ago. The firefighter was apparently at home in bed when the cop showed up and demanded that he come out of his house and arrested him for public drunkenness. They apparently proceeded to beat him during booking at RCSO. It took the jury less than five minutes to acquit and I heard he won around $750K in the civil suit.
DO NOT hire a Roane County lawyer unless you are part of the local GOB club, and expect for the local judges to rule against anyone who is not part of the clique.
this is correct about do NOT hire a Roane county attorney!!! Its a small town. If you dont know someone in the high ups like a judge or good lawyer then ur screwed. If u have a lawyer that's got a bad rep then they automatically look down on you.

<quoted text> He has not gone to jail in over 20 years, do some research before you say something. I knowing this guy, he goes through some hard shit.
I suggest you do exactly as you state. "A little research". And yes the choice to take drugs, steal clients money and even solicit drugs from your clients warrants sympathy. Your and idiot!
Spencer's license Has been suspended repeatedly and yes he's gone to jail recently. I am not sure if he has been reinstated but if your considering hiring him you can contact the BOPR and find out. However I wouldn't recommend hiring someone with such a track record.
