Jim Lawson is a public school teacher for Bay District Schools, at A. Crawford Mosley High School, in Panama City, Florida.(2,100 students) He has over 30 years of teaching experience with the past 20 years being devoted to serving his district as an in-school suspension teacher for middle and high school-age students.

In searching for a method to create a non-threatening classroom environment that fostered discipline and learning, Jim developed and implemented an original in-school suspension “model for structure.” This innovative model features a behavioral rubric for the purpose of assessing individual student performance in his I.S.S. classroom. He has enjoyed a nine-year record of success by teaching his students how to monitor their individual behavior and performance to reach the desired outcomes for personal growth, improved self-esteem, and improved self-discipline.

Jim is nationally recognized for his leadership skills and expertise in addressing school safety and dropout prevention issues. His in-school suspension model has been featured on the Education World web-site (October 28, 2004), dropout prevention books and journals, local newspapers and television. Also, in 2004, Jim received a national award, the prestigious Crystal Star for Excellence in Dropout Recovery, Intervention, and Prevention from Clemson University’s National Dropout Prevention Conference Network (NDPC)

For the past eight years Jim has presented at various national, state, regional, and local conferences throughout the country. Additionally, he has led staff development workshops and in-services in more than ten states by sharing this creative, easy to implement process to districts and schools seeking to create or improve their in-school suspension / safe school initiatives where ISS students are taught through methods of self-empowerment and responsibility.

If it is the desire / goal of the Cheatham County School Board to mandate in-school suspension, I would be willing to share the model and train the personnel to implement it.
