Anyone ever looked at Notre Dame's mascot or the Celtics? THAT is sterotyping. Most of the Indian imagery I have seen at high schools and colleges portrays them as what they are: warriors. These people need to find a new hobby.

People....PLEASE....find something better to do with your time! I went to a high school where we were the Redskins...and very proud to be! No one is trying to offend anyone....if anything this activist group should be flattered that so many schools are trying to keep Native-American traditions alive! No harm was meant. Just find something else to do!!!

These people are in the same catagory as the idiots from Kansas that do and say weird things at fallen soldier's funerals.
I also went to a high school that our name was "Indians" but we didn't have a bunch of nothings running around loose in those days, they were mostly confined to a "nut house"

Agreed in middle school we were the Seminoles and in high school we were the Indians and I don't remember anyone getting mad about it, In another middle school I went to we were the Spartans I'm guessing some angry Romans are going to start picketing soon

Geez....so much for the Vikings, the Celtics, the Seminoles, the Redskins, the Raiders, the Cowboys, the Braves, the Pirates...... these names are chosen because of their "tough" image and 'personality'....these people need to get a grip

THey are both stereotyping. Just because the Indian poptrayals are positive, does not make any less of an stereotype.

This is ridiculous.
When I went to High School (MANY years ago!) it was in a little town in IL named Pekin. It was so named because, at the time of it's founding, it was believed to be on the exact opposit side of the earth as Peking, China. It was not, of course, but the name stuck anyway. Due to this, we are the Chinks. No one was offended. In fact, one of our coaches, Mr. Lee (Chinese,) got quite a buzz out of it.

Policitac correctness caught up with the school several years ago, and they were re-named the "dragons".

BS.
My coffee cup says "ONCE a chink, ALWAYS a chink!"

Protestors about such trivialities as these need to go out and get a JOB to occupy their time more constructively!

I think people with this much time on their minds should actually use their "brain" for something more productive. I'm sure if they think hard enough (don't pop a vessel) they would find better things that would make a difference. How can one actually want to show how shallow and ignorant they are?

do you know anything about history? or racism? all American Indians were warriors? really? what messed up history teacher did you have? oh that's right, the same one every other idiot that uses that lame argument had in school. read some books! I recommend Carol Spindel's Dancing at Halftime to start then maybe Stedman's Shadows of the Indian... assuming you can read.

you too? you are using the "slippery slope" argument as well? "What next? Are bears gonna come out of the woods and sue chicago?" It is obvious you know nothing about the topic. I suggest you, too, read some books.

obviously you have never been discriminated against. i guess all the people that fought for civil rights are relics of the 1950's and 60's. now all we have are self-indulgent, lazy, stupid, people who watch reality tv and text and feel entitled. what a wonderful world. was Dr. King too p.c. for you?

You are killing me! I have an idea. If you have never talked to a Native American, if you have a confederate flag anywhere in your house, if you have read less than ten actual books, you know, without pictures, you do not get to comment on this topic. Otherwise I will have a heart attack reading the ridiculous statements one after another. I don't care if you think it is not offensive. Over 500 Indian nations oppose the usage of derogatory and racist depictions of Native Americans as mascots. does that matter to you? poor babies... sick of having to think about not scarring little children... sick of all the "political correctness" boo fucking hoo. Native Americans are four times as likely to be victims of violent crime and 60-70% of their attackers are white. that is a phenomenon exclusive to native americans... doesnt happen like that to any other group. open your eyes people... what about blackface? that okay too?

I'm an asian, and rather liberal in my views, but I think the idea that a high school had The Chinks as their mascot is absolutely...HILARIOUS AND AWESOME! Yes, I have been discriminated against. No, I don't think every instance of a slur should be insulting. Honestly, lighten up folks. Every time someone makes a big deal about this kind of thing, every time we have to be all politically correct, we are just emphasizing the differences that being PC seeks to eliminate. Stop that!

You must not be from the south, huh??

The Confederate flag being blown or hung in a house is NOT a sign of racism. It is a sign of being proud of your southern heritage. The Civil War was NOT fought over racism or slavery!! it was fought over STATE'S RIGHTS! Their problem was not the Union wanting to end slavery, it was that they wanted to take away the state's rights to govern themselves.

Yeah, I have a Confederate flag hanging proudly in my living room. It was given to me by one of my good friends, who happens to be black.

Apparently YOU need to read a history book!
