The 'Johnny Depp Effect' - An evolutionary explanation for homosexuality

Full story: www.psychologytoday.com

Who is more attractive as a mate? A guy who is kind or a guy who is cruel? A guy who is sensitive or a guy who lacks empathy? A guy who is physically attractive or a guy who is homely? A guy who can appreciate art or the guy who only appreciates ESPN? Now consider who is more likely to be gay. A guy who is kind or a guy who cruel? A guy who is sensitive or a guy who lacks empathy? A guy who is physically attractive or a guy who is homely? A guy who is...well, you get the point... This exercise in mate preferences (and stereotypes, please excuse us) serves to illustrate a simple point: Gay men are attractive. In fact, their sexual orientation might sometimes be the only trait that makes them less than the ideal mate for many women. But you already knew this. If you ever agreed with the lonely-hearted lady who lamented, "all the good ones are gay or taken," then you understand.

Pop psychology cr*p:

1. As Daniel says not all gay people are pretty.
2. Kind?- this woman has obviously never heard two bitchy queens having a catfight!
3. Sensitive?- she also obviously not ever thrown a party for a bunch of gay men. 85-90% don't have the courtesy to RSVP to a f*king invite.
4. Johnny Depp?- remember that he used to get drunk and trash hotel rooms - hardly behaviour that would render him attractive to straight ladies. By the way, I'm in no way criticizing him professionally; he's one of my favourite actors.

This rag should really be labeled "Pop Pseudoscience for Bored Breeder Bitches Today."

No kidding, I've seen PLENTY of gay men who are not attractive.

I'm certainly not a trained scientist, in Evolutionary Psychology or otherwise, but I'm not sure how valid some of this sounds. The Kin Selection theory was found unsupported because "Homosexuals did not provide more care and resources to family members than heterosexuals." So? IF homosexuality is caused by factors in one's genes, handed down from their parents, then elements of that genetic code are in their siblings, and their sibling's children, and so on. This will be true whether the homosexual in question helps to raise those children or not. He could even be DEAD and some aspect of his genetics will continue down through his siblings genetics. An absence of care by a gay uncle will not affect any gay genes that may or may not exist in the descending family.

It's absurd to suggest that ANY combination of genetics has anything to do with someone being attractive, kind, cruel, or a sports lover. If gay people tend to be prettier, nicer, and more artistic than their straight counterparts, this is most likely because they have lived lives of oppression and secrecy, possibly even under the domination of abuse and hatred. This, hopefully, will have directed them to be more empathic towards their fellow humans, and to care more about keeping an open, welcome attitude that will make them more appealing as (and to) people in general.

But again, I also know plenty of gay people who are ugly, nasty, and unpleasant to be around, and who are just as likely to have had their aforementioned tortured lives twist them into psychological train wrecks, probably without genetics playing any part

I've been to gay bars since 1993,the guys usually wear jeans and a t-shirt,there is way more smokers, and all of the mean,rude,dirty-mouthed peole are drag-queens,at least on stage. The males can't seen to have an advertisement about any subject matter without inserting a picture of a muscular man wear just enough clothing so as not to be arrested. The men all want to get laid and the women all want to move in together.

John, you sound precisely like the people you are criticizing. Are you projecting your own self image on them?

This article wa stupid.

I used to go to my local gay bar each Friday nite to drink beer, shoot pool, and hopefully meet someone attractive and nice.

The bar was certified to hold 200 people (the sign by the door said so as required by law), and most Friday nites it was packed.

If I saw 1 or 2 guys that interested me each Friday nite, that was a lot. Usually it was zero.

So the statement that most gay men are attractive is ridiculous and untrue.

I wish Johnny Depp was gay. And he's my age, and so is Brad Pitt ;)

But seriously, there is nothing scientific behind the stereotype that gay men are attractive. In movies, TV and advertising, just about everybody is attractive, gay or not. But in reality, people make up the whole range of attractiveness regardless of their sexual orientation.

And attractiveness is subjective. One person might think I'm cute, or even hot (it has happened), while another one thinks I'm plain or average, and still another finds me repulsive. I mean even Ugly Betty has fans.

I'm sure there are groups or places where gay men are more likely to be gym rats or wear designer clothes, and indulge in all sorts of extra grooming and various vanities, but here in my neck of the woods, most of the gay men are just regular guys, and few of them look like Abercrombie models or Chippendales.

But the part of the article that is printed at the top of this page is not really exactly what the rest of the article is about.

Not to fall in with the in-crowd, but I read this an highly recommend that the author avoid generalizations like this as much as possible. In a nutshell it undermines any hope we have of achieving equality by separating ourselves on our own.

I think there is a kernel of truth, in the aggregate, in some stereotypes. The summary of the article makes it clear that "attractive" is not limited to looks. In fact, some of the other attributes are listed for you to read, right there in the summary. You don't even have to click the link.

While not all gay men might be attractive I have noticed homophobes tend to be fat, ugly and nerdy. Next time you're out in public and hear the word 'fag' coming from a group of guys quickly scan the group and you'll see the guy saying it is the fattest one of them all. IMO, homophobes are unattractive, realize this and think it's better to reject gay men before they, themselves, get rejected again.

Except for the white supremacist variety, who are often in good shape physically but always seem to have ugly snarling faces.

John in toronto, that's not attacking johnny professionally, that's kinda personally attacking. I mean this man gets pinched for that once and is always getting cased for it, some mess that happened an almost 2 decades ago. He was never "Marlon brando" wild to being with if anything he straightened out since then.(In part because of Marlon) I know I sound like a fangirl, but it seems that everyone is always bringing that up about him in order to deflect any adoring attention from him.
